not everyone lives there - you have cases like Marisa living in the forest of magic - but generally if you can't defend yourself from youkai, you want to live here so you don't get disappeared
and the whole Incident/spell card battle system plays into it the same way - youkai attack humanity, reimu defeats youkai, humans are kept safe and youkai are kept respected
they have a state called 'out of commission', which is basically what happens when you blow a fairy up with danmaku, but they'll come back fine the next day. they're like cartoons
Sunny Milk, the upbeat leader of the crew. Has the power to bend light to make things invisible, the one who comes up with most of their terrible schemes.
Star Sapphire, the smart(?) nice one. Has the power to sense the locations of nearby living creatures, usually bails on the other two shortly before consequences happen to them.
it's suspected that she's based on a story of the Tokoyo God, a story from 7th-century Japan where a cult of villages decided to revere a swallowtail caterpillar as a god of the everlasting world
Back in Touhou 7, Perfect Cherry Blossom, she tried to steal the essence of spring from Gensokyo in order to make a certain sakura tree bloom. She failed.
When the taoists came in during Ten Desires, the youkai got worried that the balance of power was shifting away from them, so they called in a heavy hitter from out of town
where she keeps dreaming of being trapped in the dream world fighting dream spirits that are jealous of her for having a physical body that can enter the real world
she tries to help host a "fireworks" festival once which is just a bunch of folks coming and shooting neutered versions of their danmaku until Sukuna and Seija show up and totally hijack it
in the game, Okina is trying to find new servants to work for her, and the protagonists are possible candidates, being granted abnormal power by the doors on their backs
it's worth noting that Okina doesn't actually technically need it. ZUN originally planned to make her disabled but decided that was a bit tacky so she's more just a representation of disability as a whole
the sages are returning, the moon is up to some shit, several religions compete to gather faith, youkai factions scheme against each other in the shadows, the human village lives in blissful relative ignorance
By the way, Okina is shown to be standing up in the Extra Stage, so it isn't that she actually has any leg impairments. She isn't saying that she has a disability, but that she is a disability, and that such a disability is a necessary thing for this world.
ZUN originally planned for Okina to be in a wheelchair, because he wanted to address the issue of disabilities and how people with disabilities are the strongest. However, he decided that the topic was difficult to deal with in the game's theme, and that not treating it with the seriousness it deserves could become offensive.
I think basically he's saying she's saying that the disabled are just as important in this world as the abled, and as a god of disability she's making a statement via her use of the wheelchair
a true communist utopiaBy the way, Okina is shown to be standing up in the Extra Stage, so it isn't that she actually has any leg impairments. She isn't saying that she has a disability, but that she is a disability, and that such a disability is a necessary thing for this world.
