Quinn Angstrom
OK I'm gonna do writeups like Eric did for WH40k factions, but for Touhou factions, starting with the Scarlet Devil Mansion
Quinn Angstrom
I figure this'll be a decent way to get outsiders more established on like, the status quo of this pretty complex world
Quinn Angstrom
So, Gensokyo's in Japan
Quinn Angstrom
and it's very Japanese, having split off from the real world in the 1880s
Quinn Angstrom
before a lot of the westernization of Japan
Quinn Angstrom
which is why it's a little odd that, in the middle of all this Japanese scenery
Quinn Angstrom
https://images.plurk.com/4j19IBAfrI2AkCsvzhEDEi.png there's a house that looks like this
Quinn Angstrom
This is the Scarlet Devil Mansion, a building that probably existed in the outside world
Quinn Angstrom
It's home to EVIL VAMPIRES
Quinn Angstrom
Its origins are unknown, but its current master has ruled it for over 500 years
Quinn Angstrom
And at some point, it transplanted from Europe Somewhere (notes on that later) to Gensokyo, the land of the fantastical
Quinn Angstrom
although it's described as looking like it was always meant to stand where it does right now. Its master has the power to manipulate fate, so it's possible that it was fated to end up in Gensokyo
Quinn Angstrom
To get any further into it we need to talk about the head of the house
Quinn Angstrom
https://images.plurk.com/6wIFdRDCDbH8LRDEfRy7Ha.png The vampire, Remilia Scarlet
Quinn Angstrom
A centuries-old little brat with pretentions of nobility
Quinn Angstrom
According to what limited timeline information we have, the mansion appeared in Gensokyo in 1998 at the latest
Master Chieve
oh boy
Quinn Angstrom
Remilia wreaked some havoc for a while right after showing up, but was beaten back by other, more powerful youkai in other factions for threatening their delicate balance
Quinn Angstrom
The vampiric need to feed on humans and the human village's need to have alive humans and the general youkai populace's need to terrorize humans came to a head after a few years of rising tensions
Quinn Angstrom
which led to the original negotiations where the Spell Card rules were first codified
Quinn Angstrom
They were put to test almost immediately afterwards, in 2003, when Remilia caused the first official Incident of Gensokyo history
Quinn Angstrom
she spread a supernatural scarlet mist over all of Gensokyo, blocking out the sun
Quinn Angstrom
which led to Reimu and/or Marisa going to pay her a very explodey visit, culminating in Remilia's defeat
Quinn Angstrom
The purpose of the mist, revealed afterwards, was to allow vampires to walk around during the day without fearing the sun
Quinn Angstrom
since Remilia lost, she needs a parasol whenever she goes outside during the day
Quinn Angstrom
Let's talk about the girl herself! Remilia is a lot
Quinn Angstrom
She claims, falsely, to be a descendant of Vlad Tepes
Quinn Angstrom
She wants, very badly, for other people to think she's cool and elegant and a little scary
Quinn Angstrom
She is not
Quinn Angstrom
She's a loser
Quinn Angstrom
https://images.plurk.com/5XKMXrdftwH3ED8pApJCkO.png a picky eater who has all her servants do everything for her
Quinn Angstrom
Other members of the SDM Crew:
Quinn Angstrom
https://images.plurk.com/4nYbfFooJw9iXvGXX6zwYn.png Sakuya Izayoi
Quinn Angstrom
Head maid of the mansion. A human, with a strange and largely unknown past
Quinn Angstrom
It's been speculated in-universe that she used to be a vampire hunter, and she used to have a different name
Quinn Angstrom
the name 'Sakuya Izayoi' was given to her by Remilia
Quinn Angstrom
While she's human, there's a lot that's mysterious about her. Her age is unknown, and while she looks to be a teenager, she's described in-setting as having the mannerisms of someone much older
Quinn Angstrom
Also she has the power to stop time. Nobody knows where she got that
Quinn Angstrom
Her ability to manipulate time extends to, in accordance with quantum physics, manipulating space as well. Because of her powers, the mansion is larger on the inside than it is on the outside.
Quinn Angstrom
It's also been ICly speculated, interestingly, but not confirmed, that the second reason for the Scarlet Mist Incident was to get Sakuya to meet other humans and learn that she can still connect with them.
Quinn Angstrom
She's become a mainstay of the core cast, appearing as a playable character in a large number of games. Probably the third most after Reimu and Marisa
Quinn Angstrom
https://images.plurk.com/5glQXPIb1bSJdXqVm7np5V.png Patchouli Knowledge
Quinn Angstrom
There are two types of youkai magicians in Touhou
Quinn Angstrom
One is humans who trained until they surpassed their human limitations and became youkai
Quinn Angstrom
The other is youkai magicians born as youkai, who were never human
Quinn Angstrom
Patchouli is the latter type, and an old friend of Remilia's. Her backstory is largely unknown beyond that.
Quinn Angstrom
She lives in and operates the SDM's enormous library, because she's a nerd with athsma who doesn't want to touch grass
Quinn Angstrom
Her unique role within the SDM is that she isn't part of its hierarchy of masters and servants. She's just like Remilia's grumpy roommate
Quinn Angstrom
they call each other Remi and Patche
Quinn Angstrom
Patchouli is the only person in the crew who both can and will call Remilia's ideas stupid to her face
Quinn Angstrom
she's also a powerful magician specializing in elemental magic, using the five Japanese elements + sun and moon
Quinn Angstrom
Her affinity with each element changes by the day of the week
Quinn Angstrom
She's one of Marisa's various rivals, mainly out of a futile desire to stop Marisa from stealing books out of her library
Quinn Angstrom
https://images.plurk.com/20tS86Z7vIXuAdo5kBAKG6.png Hong Meiling
Quinn Angstrom
The Scarlet Devil Mansion's gatekeeper! Another foreigner, as is the group's theme.
Quinn Angstrom
She's a youkai from China, specific species unknown. Her job is to keep people from getting into the mansion without an invitation.
Quinn Angstrom
She's not very good at it.
Quinn Angstrom
Even when she isn't napping or slacking off, she usually just gets her ass kicked.
Quinn Angstrom
She's also the gardener, and probably the most personable member of the crew
Quinn Angstrom
Her abilities are based on qi manipulation and Chinese martial arts
Quinn Angstrom
Meiling's most exciting adventure was the time she battled an evil god of earthquakes, although she was dreaming the whole thing after reading too much manga
Quinn Angstrom
https://images.plurk.com/7p1lE0Uta1dE8mUKLFCLB0.png Koakuma
Quinn Angstrom
Questionably a real character! I don't think she has any canonical lines
Quinn Angstrom
she doesn't even have a name, koakuma just means 'little devil'
Quinn Angstrom
but she seems to be Patchouli's familiar
Quinn Angstrom
She helps out in the library and gets blown up as a midboss
Quinn Angstrom
And finally:
Quinn Angstrom
https://images.plurk.com/1zQhtgbVVGSApajUGc0uaH.png Flandre Scarlet
Quinn Angstrom
Remilia's mysterious little sister.
Quinn Angstrom
A terrifyingly powerful super-vampire with the power of absolute destruction - She can draw out the "eye" of any object, pull it into her hand, then crush it, causing the object to be destroyed.
Quinn Angstrom
Sort of a more conceptual version of Shiki's power in Tsukihime.
Quinn Angstrom
She spends most of her time locked in the basement, and has almost never seen the world beyond it.
Quinn Angstrom
For a long time, it was believed that this was because she's magically sealed in there out of fear of her power, tragically and cruelly.
Quinn Angstrom
Recent canon established, though, that this is not the case!
Quinn Angstrom
Given the nature of Flandre's power, she could leave whenever she likes. Just destroy the door.
Quinn Angstrom
But it's comfy down there, and servants bring her all the food and tea she needs. She's a shut-in.
Quinn Angstrom
She's childlike and a bit unstable, 'playing' in the form of magical hyperviolence. She probably needs a bit more enrichment down there.
Quinn Angstrom
And to wrap up this writeup, one last anecdote that I just think is really funny
Quinn Angstrom
The question came up a few times in canon of where Remilia sleeps
Quinn Angstrom
in a short story, Reimu told Remilia to go on back to her coffin, and Remilia said that coffins are for the dead
Quinn Angstrom
In Imperishable Night, Remilia once again tells Reimu that she doesn't sleep in a coffin
Quinn Angstrom
then, seven years later, the fairies manga gave us our first canonical look at Remilia's bedroom
Quinn Angstrom
and it seems that she sleeps on a four-poster bed
Quinn Angstrom
...with a coffin on it

Quinn Angstrom
Next plurk, we'll learn about Eientei
Quinn Angstrom
Hopefully this was enlightening, or at least entertaining
Princess Emily
A++ write up
Quinn Angstrom
the SDM is easily the most well-known faction so some of the more obscure ones should be fun
Quinn Angstrom
on the list... Eientei, Youkai Mountain, The Underground, Myouren Temple, The Taoists, The Lunar Capital, The Beast Alliance, Human Village, Fairies...
Princess Emily
I learned some bits. Like I thought Kaokuma had a real and bigger role somewhere I just wasn't aware of because I see her everywhere in fandom lol
Princess Emily
Koakuma? Whatevs
Quinn Angstrom
ko (child) + akuma (devil)
Quinn Angstrom
she's super popular because there's so little info on her, making her a free blank slate to characterize as moe as you want
Quinn Angstrom
daiyousei is the same deal
Quinn Angstrom
she's just the unnamed midboss before cirno
Princess Emily
oh! like when girls have their names end in -ko, except this is in front
Quinn Angstrom
yeah
Quinn Angstrom
similarly, daiyousei = dai (big) + yousei (fairy)
Quinn Angstrom
those kind of ultra-minor characters do tend to get sort of semi-acknowledged in later canon with like
Quinn Angstrom
little manga cameos in the background and stuff
Quinn Angstrom
the koakuma image above is from Foul Detective Satori
Master Chieve
god I forgot about the coffin thing
penis bacon
Yeah, there's a few midboss characters who are given deeper consistent fandom representations but have little to no canon presentation/spoken dialogue
penis bacon
Koakuma, Daiyousei, Lily White, Momiji...
Quinn Angstrom
Momiji at least got sort of promoted later, like Tewi
Quinn Angstrom
she has canon dialogue and a spell card!
Quinn Angstrom
but that'll come in the Youkai Mountain writeup
penis bacon
also I forget, was the thing about Meiling possibly having draconic heritage all fandom or was there canon speculation too
Quinn Angstrom
I think that's fan only
penis bacon
fair
penis bacon
(Dragons in Touhou don't, like, actively exist in any place you will ever see them; ZUN has mentioned them in passing as the only beings that may actually surpass gods in power but I'm pretty sure we've never seen one and never will)
Quinn Angstrom
(that's actually no longer true! to be continued)
Princess Emily
dun dun dun
penis bacon
(oh okay)
penis bacon
but yeah Meiling was largely speculated to have some sort of Dragon blood or something because so much of her imagery is dragon-based but

she's a Chinese martial artist, so that should have been 100% given
penis bacon
she's anime Bruce Lee
Doge-lover Joja
unfortunately that doesn't amount to much in Gensokyo
penis bacon
Correct
DrugsJulius
ZUN like "well they started treating the generically named midbosses like characters, so I started giving midbosses names, and people kept making up backstories for them, so I started giving them backstories" and now there's a midboss who's the secret instigator of the plot
