In response to the new national security law in Hong Kong, Plurk has suspended its process for responding to user data requests from Hong Kong authorities.
We believe freedom of expression is a fundamental human right and supports the freedom of an individual or a community to articulate their opinions and ideas without fear of retaliation.
It's incredible to see social networks large and small all raising their middle fingers to what happened in Hong Kong. On behalf of the friends I have there, who are now scared for their lives, thank you.
Hey guys~ now would be a good time to back up your plurks just in case. I'm not super up to date on what this means but I'm paranoid in case of retaliation against plurk
You don't have to start a call to action like that in a public plurk though. This is in response to the new security law that was passed by China on June 30 in Hong Kong to target the protests that's going on. And Plurk has Hong Kong (and Taiwanese) users who are pro-protests so they're expressing their stance. (as did Google, Facebook, Whatsapp, etc)
mainland China likes to think they have control over Taiwan, but they don't. they are two seperate nations, and considering a LOT of foreign nations are standing up for HK, plurk would be incredibly low on the list to retaliate against, before Taiwan laughs at them.
that's fair. I apologize, I just worry in situations like this. I didn't mean for it to come off as making any sort of statement but "hey just in case"
i can't donate or spend much money now, but thanks plurk, for doing what's right! everyone should have the right to free speech! and if china thinks it can come after a company that isn't even based within its own borders ... brb laughing because that'll be a disaster.

: My friend, if the entirety of the international community thinks something is bad and only one country thinks it’s good... it may be time for some reevaluating
I can't speak for anyone else in this plurk, but my stance here is that beating and imprisoning people for online hobbies that don't hurt people is evil, and I say that as someone whose own government does so.
So, those are countries on a map where the governments have taken some stances, but the thing that at least some of us are cheering is a different matter.
The borders of China have changed repeatedly over those thousands of years, and the people who live there today were not alive at that time, so if they do not consider themselves beholden to that history, then there's some conversation that needs to happen.
Okay, it seems like you're more interested in dropping links to resources that don't adequately link their sources, than in responding to the people here.
If you are doing so deliberately so that, when we dismiss you in turn, you can then complain about us being closed-minded and ignoring the truth for our own agendas or whatever spin you care to put on it, by all means, have fun.
Guys to be honest I’m curious if Mr Frnkstein is supported by the CCP Otherwise it’s weird to see any person spend so much time and effort defend unhumantarian oppression
i know it’s literally pointless to say this in here but like, idk man if a people want to be independent and another country says they’re not allowed to go that’s pretty fucked up
Let's not feed the troll anymore, guys. He's obviously not interested in conversation nor seem to care about the opinions of the people who are/can be affected by China's policies, who if I may remind, is a larger chunk of this platform's userbase than the English-speaking one.
oh ffs shut up. mute the plurk and move on if you're this bootyblistered over people supporting Hong Kong's right to free speech and their want to be free of fucking communism.
i’m just gonna say that’s such a hilariously ignorant comparison for someone in here trying to invoke black lives matter that i can only assume its being made in bad faith
It is extremely disingenuous to ignore the larger protest movement and also the feelings of people in HK themselves because the far right and facists latched onto a subset who want full independence, just, for anyone who dives into those links. The ongoing protests have been more nuanced and more about the HK government's actions and--
The threat to the 1 party 2 systems that the extradition bill was seen as. The national security law has a lot from that bill that erupted the protests originally in removing HK autonomy to manage and persecute their own crimes in their own system.
ANYWAY I support Plurk's stance in deciding not to cooperate with authorities to persecute speech. Plurk is much closer to the reality of that whole situation than any of us in the US and I'm sure they're decisions are based on their own experiences and morals and not because some neo-nazi in Europe said it was good.
They may not be paid off by the CCP. A lot of folks in mainland China are fed nothing but CCP propaganda their whole lives and will happily regurgitate that propaganda onto the Internet and stick their fingers in their ears when other people say something different.
i feel like i recognize the plurk name and they've had some other Hot Takes™ about different policies/countries before so I support just ignoring and blocking them because they aren't going to change their minds. (I'm blocking them myself now)
Please remember to report their plurk if you can, since this is clearly a case of violating Plurk's content policy - Especially under Prohibited. The user in question once advocated murdering individuals in another user's plurk, to my understanding, so they are a repeat offender of this sort of behaviour.
But to focus on the plurk's original contents at hand: Please stay safe, everyone in Hong Kong, and keep fighting! Know you have our support and backing, if that helps in anyway.
'Fascism' as a political philosophy is characterized by strong authoritarian rule, the internal suppression of free speech, the use of nationalist tropes to insulate the nation, and the use of a scapegoat to treat as a threat to unite the nation (frequently a racial scapegoat and other nations). CCP fits the bill more than Hong Kong does
a political debate also only works if you're actually engaging with what the people who disagree with you are saying instead of trying to beat them over the head with a link dump, strangely enough
while i agree to many people dissuading them, they're one of those bunch who just link bump expecting we would "understand" with publicated media proof. just... don't engage with the troll.

Please suspend the process for responding to user data requests from Russian authorities too.
hello from the other side😂
I’m curious if Mr Frnkstein is supported by the CCP
Otherwise it’s weird to see any person spend so much time and effort defend unhumantarian oppression
This thread is making a Hongkonger feel so supported and loved.
Love y'all
