The good people of Helena, MT, are going to remove the Confederate memorial fountain in their fair city.
The Confederacy was defeated 25 years before Montana even became a state. Why would they memorialize the Confederacy other than to assert that people of color were not welcome? It was donated by Daughters of the Confederacy who supported the Klan
You have to realize that there are many pockets of supremacism in the NW. Idaho, Montana, Washington....there are places they gather, build compounds, pool monies, etc., to prepare for the day when...well, days like last weekend, when they can push their agenda more publicly.
Yes. It isn't about history, it's about Jim Crow and boot-to-the-face of racial and religious minorities. MOst of the "Confederate Statues" sprung up to reenforce Jim Crow - which was the last period of mass Intolerance in the US from 1886-1960. (Ushered in by a terrible series of SCOTUS decision that created the framework for it for nearly 70 years!).
yeah, I lived up the road from the robert e Lee school in Wenatchee and people where so damn proud of the school name. like insanely proud of it...was weird, to me.
