“We are an organization fighting for women’s rights in the music industry by providing a much-needed platform for their work and supporting their creative development,” an Oram Awards organizer wrote. “Our position on trans rights is that trans women are women and we hope that everyone we work with responds to that respectfully.”
The Oram Awards is a platform for innovation in sound, music, and related technologies. With the support of lead partners The Radiophonic Institute, PRS Foundation and the British Council, our aim is to elevate the work and voices of Women, Trans and Non-Binary music creators in electronic music.
Named after Daphne Oram, one of the founding members of the original BBC Radiophonic Workshop, the awards aim to build on her legacy. Along with other women in the workshop, Oram played a vital role in establishing women at the forefront of innovation in newly-emerging audio technologies not only in the UK but around the world.
The positive shift in representation has been welcomed in recent times, yet it is still not a level playing field for women innovating in sound and music.
While it would be preferred for a women-only award not to be necessary, for the immediate future, The Oram Awards will continue tobe open to women and gender expansive artists: in recognition of Daphne Oram as a pioneer and an inspiring role model to other women who are currently under-represented in electronic music.
“This is not to say she was perfect or everyone around her was villainous, but she was standing up for something she felt was undervalued. And she was met with the attitude: this woman is very difficult, and willful, and stubborn, and these are all bad things for a woman to be.”
The Oram Award was launched this month in her honour by the PRS Foundation and the New BBC Radiophonic Workshop to “celebrate women innovating in sound and music”.

幾年後這個獎項就變成了:男人就是女人,女人不准有意見!我們不認為設立女性專屬的獎項是有必要的,雖然我們支持女性,但你們應該要學會包容任何宣稱自己不是男人的人!
