I've had a windows computer for almost 2 years and I still hate it. I miss my apple. It's just so much more user friendly and intuitive. The END.

Don't you still have your Mac?
Mmw Strangelove
Yep. I have had only Mac for like 20 years. I had to get a Surface for my steno stuff and use it as little as possible because it's so crappy in comparison. Even the hardware is so cheap and flimsy. I'm already having screen issues with it and literally all it does is sit on a stand on my desk and get used three hours a day for a word processor.

I bought an iMac at the same time and it'll probably outlive me.

I am out of desk real estate so I got a Shadow VM to use for Windows from my Mac. I'm not a major gamer, but it works well for what I do and I can get to it from work as well (like I'm doing right now!).

One of my sisters who is rolling in dough buys my Dad a new Mac desktop every few years, and I have his old one from 2011 sitting on my desk that I basically use like a TV. It's just a bit slow, will still run SL if I push it. My work computer (on right now) is a 2019 macbook pro. Will also easily run SL, just not ideally.

My personal computer is a macbook pro and I love it. I returned the PC I bought because it broke AND I hated it. I tried to love it, but it just would not happen.

dkronfeld : I technically still have it but I don’t use it because the majority of my games nowadays are windows only since I got game pass
OhCecilia
I’m basically being forced to use windows. And honestly it’s a PITA to keep rebooting between the two, gave up and put it on the side.
OhCecilia
One day, I’ll trade in my baby mac for a proper iMac and use that to watch movies and browse the internet like god intended.
dkronfeld
Honestly, I'd prefer your Mini to an iMac, but that's maybe just me :-)
OhCecilia
dkronfeld : you say that but you don’t know how crap my monitors are compared to iMac! And buying a monitor the quality of an iMac monitor will cost so much you may as well buy the iMac.
OhCecilia
I reallllly miss the iMac monitors. Their resolution is amazing.
Mmw Strangelove
The monitor is why I didn't get a mini. Yep.

Windows is the crappiest of OSs
OhCecilia
thaumata: you really can't compare. I remember when I bought my monitors and granted, it was earlier in the pandemic, but most that came even close to mac were like well over 500. I honestly forget and haven't checked since then, but I doubt it's much better now.
Mmw Strangelove
Yep. My original plan was to pick up a couple nice monitors and a mini and then I had a real reality check with my budget. Monitors have gone way up since I last needed on.

This is not to argue with you, but a Mini+Studio Display is about CAN$1000 more up front than an iMac, but the display will outlast the computer, so you don't have to pay for it when you upgrade.
dkronfeld
A Mini + a (very good) Dell 4K display is about $200 less than an iMac.
Mmw Strangelove
Next time I upgrade!
dkronfeld
(That's not to say that you should do this or that, only my reasoning about why I like the Mini over the iMac.) Personally I stick to laptops, but I did buy the last of the Intel Minis last fall because I still need an Intel machine around for a few years more.
Mmw Strangelove
dkronfeld : I would have gotten a macbook but I was already getting the surface. I wanted a big old screen.
dkronfeld
Yeah, I'm fussy about displays too :-)
dkronfeld
I would really, really, really fight going away from Mac though. MacOS has a wonderfully usable candy coating that (mostly) Just Works sitting on top of a real Unix core: It's pretty much the perfect OS for getting stuff done.
Mmw Strangelove
It's a long story but the short version is that you don't get a choice in steno. The software is $4k and only runs on Windows. I'm waiting for Plover to put them out of business.
