I don't know enough about Gilded Age fashion to say where this is coming from so I'm just going to assume it is on theme because it's Janelle Monae and she can do nothing wrong.
I commented on Joe Jonas already (the comment was 'at least he did something. anything' ) but not on Sophie Turner but that is because I feel... absolutely nothing for her outfit
let alone 'this looks like an outfit for a different fancy event that isn't supposed to be as extra at the Met Gala' I feel like I could probably see someone dressed like that walking down the street.
here we have the first demonstration in this plurk of why I'm like 'you know what Joe Jonas we're grading menswear on a curve so you're doing pretty okay'
I think that the sheer over-abundance of black mesh at this Met Gala diminishes what impact it could have theoretically had if everyone else had not also worn black and also I maintain that this picture is literally a standing portrait for an f/go character's card art
Anderson Paak saw me suffering through how boring most of the men's looks are and while I don't know if I can say he did a good job at anything remotely resembling the theme I can say he did heal me.
Sebastian Stan did not heal me. 'please,' I said, 'wear anything but a basic fucking suit,' I said, and everyone who heard my cries immediately had the theme deleted from their memory
Kacey Musgraves. I don't think this dress has anything to do with the theme and I don't find it very exciting, but she went hard on the fan/hair/gloves/jewelry to sell it to me anyway somehow
yeah I see where they are coming from even when we disagree. they also have way more investment in the actual fashion era than I do and know more about it so I can understand why like they are much more appreciative of Billie Eilish's dress than me
to add to our disagreements I understand why they hate La La Anthony's look but I'm just so glad she's wearing something interesting that I could not see at literally any other time or place
BASICALLY YEAH. there is an irony here also where so many people wore black or dark colors and it was a phenomenally massive waste that they did. but I wish Billie Eilish wore darker colors.
Kaia Gerber also definitely thought the 20s counted as the Gilded Age but when I first saw it I had my expectations lowered enough that I was still like 'well at least it looks like a period that is not literally today'
but since then I have seen better outfits like SJP and I realized what we could have and so now I would like to revise my previous stance. this dress is fucking boring
Denee Benton also thought the theme was prom. this silhouette is genuinely interesting to me though, I tentatively really like it and want to see more angles of it
Camila Mendes is also probably aiming more for 20s but looks good. this is pretty much exactly what I would imagine someone would wear to the Met Gala for this theme though so it's not really exciting
it's not reinventing the wheel but it sticks the landing SO good. I don't feel bored looking at her which is apparently an exceptional victory this year
Leslie Odom Jr did try for interesting. he did try. unfortunately it basically just amounted to a boring suit with part of the sleeves cut off and a weird hat
and the trimming is somehow simultaneously invoking wild west, corsetry, AND late 19th century military uniform..... its many little things all at once and i love it .... there is CREATIVITY at play there
I don't know what emotion to feel when I look at Paapa Essiedu. honestly at this point my brain is just like 'well if it's not a completely basic bitch suit I guess that means it's ok in some respect or another'
it's starting to mistake 'even marginally unusual suit' for 'not a suit' and also starting to mistake 'my tiredness is not increased exponentially' for 'it's doing something for me'
Tracey Collins and Eric Adams who looks cute. I don't like Tracey Collins' dress but she looks cute anyway. I want to play mahjong with her. Eric Adams has one of the more successful swings at adding visual interest to a basic bitch suit tonight
all I know about her is her Met Gala looks from this year and last year both of which I just saw today and I'm convinced Quannah Chasinghorse can do no wrong
Amy Schumer. there are like... details of this and aspects of the premise of it that I like, aesthetically, but it does not deliver in practice. just blah
Even if tonight’s theme was the roaring 20s, Gemma Chan’s dress would still be so fucking ugly.
SOBBING
