Villain
Curse Eater thoughts
Villain
Inspired by Quinn’s Rock Lee plurk
Villain
Sabra is ostensibly the main character
Villain
(Though I certainly hope the rest of the party gets plenty of focus and cool moments)
Quinn Angstrom
(they will)
Villain
Right now, Sabra has the nebulous goal of “get strong enough to protect everyone”
Villain
The problem with that is
Villain
That was Kurosaki Ichigo’s goal
Villain
And Ichigo got really fucking flat and boring later on in the story because he didn’t have any motivation for staying involved in the story beyond “if I don’t Aizen-” or whoever “-will kill all my friends”
Quinn Angstrom
he's reactive instead of active
Villain
Ichigo’s main contemporaries, Luffy and Naruto, both had very concrete goals
Villain
Luffy: find one piece and become the pirate king
Naruto: become hokage so my village acknowledges my worth
Villain
So if I want Sabra to really shine she’s gotta have some kind of goal like that
Villain
So what I’m thinking is
Villain
Nadia the immaculate is the strongest Curse Eater, and someone who Sabra I think has a bit of a fangirl crush on
Villain
What if I rework that slightly
Villain
Nadia actually had an interaction with Sabra
Villain
Nadia was like
Villain
In some way she either said or implied that someone like Sabra could never be the strongest curse eater
Villain
And Sabra went “OH YEAH?”
Quinn Angstrom
hmm
Quinn Angstrom
it's workable, but may need some massaging from an NPC characterization standpoint
Villain
I don’t know if that’s ic for Nadia
Quinn Angstrom
first question is, what is 'someone like Sabra' lacking
Quinn Angstrom
ostensibly
Quinn Angstrom
that makes her unable to reach the peak
Quinn Angstrom
is she just untalented? are her powers apparently limited in some way
Villain
Well maybe just for a start
Echo
Would it potentially be more IC if Nadia was like... genuinely well-meaning and nice, but in a way that unfortunately wound up being kind of condescending?
Villain
Nadia is super high class and Sabra is a feral little gremlin
Echo
Sort of an 'oh sweetie, you don't have to worry about this fight, I'm going to take care of everything' vibe.
Villain
But Maybe it wasn’t an insult so much as a challenge
Quinn Angstrom
I'm not sure that social class or elegance are something that the beasts templar put much faith in
Villain
“You think you belong up here with me?”
Quinn Angstrom
since Sacheverel is on the Top Three and he's also a disgusting goblin man
Villain
prove it
ArtIsArt
You could also kind of pull a MHA, like have her admire/compete/want to be that good or better?
Quinn Angstrom
that does sound more like Nadia
Quinn Angstrom
aspirational rather than deprecating
Quinn Angstrom
rather than "you can't be as strong as me", you could get a similarly powerful motivation from "you can be as strong as me"
Villain
Maybe someone ELSE in the top ranks told Sabra she sucks
Quinn Angstrom
the other route to go would be if someone other than Nadia was the deprecating one yeah
Quinn Angstrom
a different Sun
Quinn Angstrom
but that route does benefit from Sabra having something actually holding her back - lack of talent, unstable powers due to weird heart implant, etc
Villain
I think Sacheveral would be on the same wavelength as Sabra so probably not him
Quinn Angstrom
that she can then overcome through effort and guts
Villain
Her powers ARE pretty unstable
dragon time
Nadia is kind of reminiscent of All Might in that, and I'm not sure if Sabra is consciously aware of this,
Quinn Angstrom
if you want to go that route I can give you a Sun who might be an asshole to Sabra in backstory
dragon time
If something happens to her there's absolutely nobody on her level to pick up the slack
Quinn Angstrom
become the Beast Templar's pillar of support
dragon time
But an insanely aspirational goal might be "I want to be someone that Nadia can rely on"
Villain
That would be cool
dragon time
We don't know much about Sabras pre George life but you could give her a sort of relatable anecdote
Villain
I like the idea of Nadia desperately searching for someone who could beat her if she fell
dragon time
Like, "I thought my parents were the strongest people in the world when I was seven and then dad got kicked by an ox and was laid up in bed and I had to do all this stuff around the house to make up for him and it was scary but also I felt really strong"
Villain
On the down low
Villain
She’s an orphan but
Villain
Something like that maybe
dragon time
I like not knowing exact canon of what is going through Nadias head but given her situation as the worlds strongest curse eater
dragon time
I would personally be concerned if I had a chance of turning into an unstoppable monster
Villain
Yeah it makes sense as something a normal person in that situation would be worried about but Nadia isn’t a normal person
Villain
So who knows
dragon time
One thing most go to shounen protags have is a defining childhood moment that you can look back at and go "oh that's why he's like that"
Quinn Angstrom
sends you some options on disco
Villain
Josuke and his pompa
Villain
Pompadour*
dragon time
Deku watching All Might's video and asking his mom if he can be a hero, Naruto alone on the swings as the rest of his ninja class celebrates with their parents, Ichigo and Grand Fisher, Luffy knifing himself in the face in like panel one
dragon time
Josuke and the pomp
Quinn Angstrom
I'd say Luffy crying while being rescued by Shanks minus one arm
Quinn Angstrom
is more his big formative panel
dragon time
True, that's a good panel
Villain
Two possibilities occurred to me while clocking out of work
Villain
1: Sabra remembers her parents’ deaths
Villain
When she was like 4 years old
Villain
2: a tragedy involving Sabra (10 years old), her pet rabbit, and an over the top anime bully/sociopath
Villain
Both are pretty dark, potentially, but this is a dark story
Villain
In either case, someone stronger than Sabra took someone from her that she loved
Villain
God, what if both?
Villain
And then for a third time, some asshole in the top ten casually took something/someone from her too
Villain
And she had a low point of “no matter what I do there’s always someone who can just take it away from me with brute strength”
Villain
And then Nadia was like “If you want it to stop, you can”
Villain
“Just get on my level scrublord”
Villain
(Paraphrased)
dragon time
2. It doesn't even have to be a proper sociopath - fitting the kind of story this is, it could just be that she has a rabbit she loves very much and it's a harsh winter and the boss orphan of whatever pecking order she is in goes
dragon time
"We're all starving and I am making a decision for our own good and if you don't like it you can get stronger than me and take over"
dragon time
Or possibly something less blatant to make the Nadia incident stand out as the star and endpoint
Villain
I think it being a matter of survival kind of dilutes the moment
Villain
The big thing I’m getting is Sabra fucking loathes bullies
