Hey hey, anyone here experienced with sourdough starters at all?

ɪᴛsᴜᴋɪ🐰
what up

Lauren
yeah I bake with sourdough regularly

Link
So my starter stinks.

Link
I've checked the blogs, and they say funky is going to happen.

Lauren
how old is it and what's your feeding method right now?

ɪᴛsᴜᴋɪ🐰
what does it smell like?

Link
But it reeks. Like, cleared us out of the kitchen when we fed it today.

Link
We're doing 60 mils of unbleached flour and warm water apiece daily, throwing out half first, this is day four.

Link
God, I don't even know how to describe it.

Link
Like, I'll see if the spouse has a better description, but it's almost. Idk. Bile like? Like, an undertone of bile.

Lauren
give it time

ɪᴛsᴜᴋɪ🐰
mmmmm

Lauren
day four is early and you probably have some weird stuff going on

Lauren
should settle out in a week

ɪᴛsᴜᴋɪ🐰
how is your storage method?

ɪᴛsᴜᴋɪ🐰
it should settle soon!

Lauren
vomit smell is common in that time period

Link
It bubbles beautifully, and looks like the texture the blog showed! But the smell, fuck, we nearly pitched it today. We have it resting in a jar that seals with a rubber??? ring, we wrap it in a kitchen towel because our house is pretty cold.

Link
Okay thank you so much, I've wanted to do this for a while, but when I think funky I think cheese, and this is way stronger than a lot of cheeses and less pleasant of a tone.

Lauren
usually it'll get extremely bubbly at that age while the bacteria and fungi fight over who's winning

Link
So basically just give it time, then?

Link
Thank you for answering!

Lauren
it'll go through another period of probably slightly less active for a bit, then eventually fix itself if you keep up what you're doing

Lauren
when it's ready it will smell either like sourdough bread (if you're familiar) or more toward vinegar sour but not vomit

Link
Yeah, thank you! That helps a lot. The blog had a lot of useful charts and info, but no one really seems to talk about how strong of a smell it could have.

Lauren
I actually do 20/20/20 with mine - keep 20 g of previous starter, add 20 g flour and 20 g water each time

ɪᴛsᴜᴋɪ🐰
yup! What lauren said, the smell will gradually go away, just make sure to cover your nose/mouth when you feed it again!

Link
Yeah, I'll wear a mask next time. I just didn't expect it! Yesterday there was barely any scent.

Link
ALSO. Y'ALL. Did you name your starters?

Lauren
just bacteria thinking they're winning

Lauren
yeah lmao mine's Zuggtmoy, the DnD demon lady of fungi

Link
The one winning will be me when I get to make sourdough everything.

Link
I love it.

ɪᴛsᴜᴋɪ🐰
when i had mine in school it was just called Stinkbug

Link
We named ours Karen, after the murderous emu from Useless farm on Tiktok. The final jar has a live laugh love sticker ready for the outside, because the emu has a live laugh love plaque in the pen.

Link
Stinkbug is accurate!

ɪᴛsᴜᴋɪ🐰
and omg that's cute

Link
It's funny to me at least, haha. Something useful named after something decidedly considered useless.

ɪᴛsᴜᴋɪ🐰
yup

Link
My starter is struggling. :C
