Feeling relieved - my kid is having his Eagle Scout ceremony soon and a state senator wanted to send someone to present a certificate. I checked his voting record. He’s republican, and it’s not perfect, but he has sponsored anti-discrimination legislation for LGBT+ people.

With both G and + people in my family, I was not going to allow someone who supported that kind of hate into our celebration.

I mean, I know you are cool and smart and everything, but an eagle scout parent that stands up to the fascist, racist patriarchy, too? Really? Just stahp.

Make a point to mention it when you meet him: ”I was a bit worried when I learned a republican was getting involved in this ceremony, but I was glad to find out the senator is against discrimination.“ Or something. Just so they know how many people discrimination laws affect and he isn't tempted to change his stance. Or just ignore me.

: I was thinking something similar. It's going to be his chief of staff attending but still worth the mention.
Stereo Nacht
Yes. Letting them know there are people out there for whom it's important is key.

Would you consider letting the gay press know about this? If he's R but he's behaving like a real human, he should be encouraged and supported.

Corgi
: Still should be replaced by a D, honestly.

: Well, two things - one, if he's doing his job adequately, he skews the stats and shows he's not under the thumb of the Party. Two, Charlie Crist held still and the party moved around him. He was voted in as R, declared independent, then joined D without ever changing his positions. The state senator could be asked if he would ever consider it.
