Shan-o-ween
Luke Skywanker : I’m seeing more and more of that shit and as someone with a masters I’m just like
Luke Skywanker
yeah it's bs
Luke Skywanker
A few years ago when Seattle raised minimum wage to $15 I was making... $15 to hire, train, and supervise people
Luke Skywanker
Granted they were volunteers but STILL that is not a "minimum wage" job.
Shan-o-ween
The first recession fucked up what businesses want for interns and entry / part timers
Luke Skywanker
yup
Luke Skywanker
Well it also created a class of workers who was ok with working for little/nothing just because it was the ONLY option to get experience.
DryadGurrl
Associates + driver's license
$15 /hour
'own car will be used for 'errands''
for a front desk/secretarial position
Luke Skywanker
You better be paying mileage (I've used my own car for several jobs, but I got reimbursed)
DryadGurrl
there was no mention of that, no
Luke Skywanker
Yeah that's a weird thing to put up top. :|
DryadGurrl
(and I can't drive anyway so that one was right out even if it wasn't for otherwise stupid restrictions)
Luke Skywanker
I mean I've gotten shit benefits for the last few jobs I had but I was also working for like, two person nonprofits so I get that. STILL it's maddening that this is all we're "worth." (I don't blame the NPs, they were doing the best they could with the money they could get, it's a structural thing)
Shan-o-ween
Or when they don’t mention anything about driving in a job and put it at the very bottom. I legally can’t drive for medical reasons so it’s just :| I don’t have the privilege of even thinking about getting a DL put that shit up top.

I understand security/ front desk at some places having to run errands
DryadGurrl
yeah, putting DL required or bilingual required at the very bottom is bullshit
Luke Skywanker
I was taught that when interviewing people, I couldn't even ask if they had a car.
DryadGurrl
oh yeah, at least in CA it's illegal to ask that
Luke Skywanker
The question was "can do you your duties as assigned" and like, yes I have had jobs where it would have been impossible without a car.
DryadGurrl
which is why saying that a DL is required is how they get around it
Luke Skywanker
yes
DryadGurrl
see also requiring you to give your zip code on the online form, so they can determine if you're in a low-income area
Shan-o-ween
it's also how they get around reasonable accommodation
DryadGurrl
yeah that too
Shan-o-ween
i don't think the zip code is shdey
DryadGurrl
I didn't think so either until I had a (former) placement agency/recruiter tell me that's what it was about as often as not
DryadGurrl
so you know where they're coming from, and based on location how likely it is that they'll walk off the job etc.
Shan-o-ween
if only one source I'm eh on it.
DryadGurrl
fair
