friends from the US: I saw a TikTok that said that the fact that Columbus was looking for India and stumbled onto America by chance is not taught in US schools... is this true? Just curious

when i was a kid, it wasn't in the books that way, but i seem to recall knowing that was how it happened, but i also read a lot on my own so i may have discovered it on the side. i don't think teachers were teaching it that way.

It was what we were taught, I'm 30 this year.

I was taught that in the late 70s

I think it may depend on what part of the states the school is in as well as who is teaching. The education system varies wildly not just from state to state, but also school to school and sometimes even teacher to teacher.

I learned this in 1st grade.

We were taught this in all the schools i know of, allot of kids shows also talked about it that way as well, so not sure how accurate that tiktok is, if it did happen like that it is probually a rare thing.

Definitely what we were taught as well. That said, I've heard some ridiculous stories about how poor sex-ed was, not to mention there's places that had petitions to include creationism in science classes, so I wouldn't put it past some public school in the middle of nowhere to screw up history class.

FYI: Texas has its own "curriculum" in English and science (probably math, too, but unsure), and most of it has been modified to remove "unpatriotic" facts and insert as much religious b.s. as they think the public would accept. It's possible (and likely) that this may be one of the facts deleted from Texas curriculum to make room for "intelligent design."

I was thought this but I don’t think it was specifically India that was mentioned I think it was taught as the Far East

since it was an American who wrote it I was just curious if this is a common thing in US schools.
