I really do not understand what is wrong with people. NJ has caught up with the rest of the country and yet when the state is doing TINY restrictions (not enough imo) people are losing their shit. We now exceeding our peak numbers from our peak back in spring.

Sadly, it's the same all over Canada

: like, I get fewer people are dying, but that's because they've gotten better at treating, MAYBE the strain is even a little bit weaker, ok, fine, but still.... hospitals are still getting overwhelmed regardless, so I don't get why there aren't the same precautions in place
dkronfeld
I think it's a balancing act. The governments have only so much ability to impose controls before people begin to disregard them en masse. Once that happens a government loses the perception of authority and their only recourse is whatever the equivalent of martial law is locally, or to accept that they are no longer able to govern.

Fortunately (or not) COVID-19 is not a serious direct threat to the vast majority of the population, so it's not perceived to be as big a problem as it really is, by a large portion of the population. If this were something like Ebola, people would be far more willing to comply with restrictions.

: I mean, it's enough of a threat that hospitals are at full capacity. I don't know how that's not a concern to people.
dkronfeld
When faced with something difficult and potentially threatening, but not imminently threatening, people will often minimize the danger. It's human nature.
Misha
That's amazingly fatalistic.

honestly I was... not impressed with compliance during my time in NJ lately

i'm seeing at least 2 to 3 cases a day with my employees

: I imagine it's because of WHERE in NJ you were though? Compliance in my area is actually really solid. Granted, I only go to CVS and grocery stores, but it's been solid. I do hear people in south jersey suck though

I don't think it's particularly fatalistic; individuals don't always follow that pattern of behaviour, but a lot of us do a lot of the time, and it's pretty evident in our collective behaviours. I'm not defending or indicting people here, just making an observation.

sorry about that, my cat had things to say. she doesn't understand why people don't want to stay home anyway.

: I get what you’re saying and it’s an important part of surviving as a species and all. But... lots of things are inherent in our nature and not actually good and/ or are possible to fight against.
dkronfeld
I agree, and I'm neither excusing nor defending it.
