Plurk Poll: What are your favorite horror movies? Which ones genuinely scare you?
Pumpkinmelon
In this case "scare" means genuine induction of fear and paranoia, not "this is super gross and/or upsetting"
spiteologist
The original Wicker Man is definitely up there, although I'm not sure it actually scares me
spiteologist
...movies in general tend not to scare me, though. like, ever. so i am a bad benchmark for that
spiteologist
also The Thing is a classic for a reason
Madame Leota
Hereditary got to me when I watched it
Pumpkinmelon
That is fair, some people just don't get spooked by films- there's very few that spook me
Haunted Boobs
Hmm, yeah, I'm not sure if I can name any movies that scare me, exactly, but one of my absolute favorite horror movies is an obscure, little known movie called Dust Devil. It's weird and eerie and IDK, just different and I really dig it.
spiteologist
in more modern films, I was really struck by Under The Shadow, although honestly idek if it's a horror film so much as an extremely unsubtle supernatural allegory for war
Haunted Boobs
Also I really enjoy Wake Wood, an Irish horror movie that while it does have unpleasantness with animals, it's not gratuitous, it's connected to the plot. But it's one of my favorite 'came back wrong' and 'creepy little town' takes.
Bah Humbug
The Circle. It's not marketed as a horror film in any way, but it creeps me right the fuck out because we're so close to that actual level of technology. And Antiviral because it's an extremely creepy slow burn horror movie. (It does have some very gross and/or upsetting scenes in it, tho.)
Haunted Boobs
Just has a very unique spin on classic horror tropes
Pumpkinmelon
I think ones that manage to scare me have to get to some of the specific stuff that scares me- an unknown intruder in my house that I'm unaware of, taxidermy or other weird animals speaking in human voices
Haunted Boobs
Oh, and Room 1408. It deviates so much from the original short story but that only does it favors, imo. Beautiful pacing, gorgeous effects, eerie visuals, great cast....
sneaky plane
Annihilation is very psychological horror and it's very good
sneaky plane
deeply unsettling movie
sneaky plane
really enjoy it
spiteologist
Svankmeyer's 1988 "Alice" isn't technically a horror film but it is very good and did actually give me the creeps a bit so let's chuck that out there
spiteologist
that's not how you spell his name dammit me
spiteologist
Svankmajer. Svankmajar? something czech
Pumpkinmelon
I like the original Grudge (that one is super incredibly good and ALSO frightening), The Thing, 28 days later, a bunch of cheesy ones like the Nightmare on Elm Street series/Tremors/Critters, 9 is a horror movie idc what anyone says, The Ritual, Halloween 2018 is a favorite
Pumpkinmelon
The original Halloween ofc
Pumpkinmelon
sneaky plane The middle third of Annihilation is DEEPLY unsettling and extremely good, its one of the only movies that's ever given me nightmares, I just wish the beginning and end didn't fucking suck
Pumpkinmelon
I admire people who like that movie because I wish I could
Pumpkinmelon
It managed to scare the shit out of me and be super great when they were exploring the shimmer
Haunted Boobs
The Ritual is a damn good movie
Pumpkinmelon
I need to watch The Ritual in full because I fucking love the Jotunn, I just wish my dad hadn't ruined it
TRON
I enjoy Alien and Aliens, but they don't scare me. I've seen Jurassic Park called a horror movie, if so, it's my favorite one.
Pumpkinmelon
Alien and Aliens yeah for sure, and I do suppose the Jurassic Park movies are action-monster-thrillers
Bah Humbug
Tho I will say, the only film that has ever given me actual nightmares is Willy Wonka. To the point that I couldn't even watch the promos for the remake. (Mostly this is because the first time I watched it was at exactly the wrong time in my life to do so.)
Pumpkinmelon
oh no
Bah Humbug
I do have a recurring Jurassic Park dream, but it's not really a nightmare because I'm not still afraid when I wake up.
titantoadstools
Jurassic Park is good.
titantoadstools
I like Trick-R-Treat (the one from the early 2000's)
Pumpkinmelon
Jurassic Park is extremely good. I was obsessed with them as a kid and 3 was my favorite when I was... probably too young to be enjoying raptors breaking necks that much
Pumpkinmelon
Trick-R-Treat is also a blast

Hitchcock's "The Birds" is disturbing if ya don't watch the end.
the film, overall, is scary - but the ending is so stupid it manages to undo all the legit-scary that precedes it. it's the last 15 minutes at most tho, probably less - if ya can stop before the insipid ending, it's great as a psychological horror.
╭╭(V)▽_▽(V)╮╮🍂
...update, I rechecked The Birds' ending, it's not anywhere near as stupid as I remembered it being
sparky ⚡
honestly. The Others.
sparky ⚡
It was Baby's First Horror Movie
sparky ⚡
also The Village by M. Night Shyamalan is criminally unrelated, fight me
sparky ⚡
One of my favorite scores from anything, ever
sparky ⚡
(plus of course sixth sense)
sparky ⚡
(If Toni Colette is in it, generally speaking, it's probably really good XD)

[cw: mental illness, ig?]
either everyone everywhere just. unanimously silently-agreed to remove the cringe-ending I thought I'd seen, or the ending I remember wasn't real in the first place. :Ua

(my money's on "I managed to hallucinate a scene" cause I have done that with several films I first watched as a kid & then rewatched years later)
titantoadstools
don't know about "genuine scare" but maybe annihilation comes close because mutating cells and also it managed to make bears even scarier
titantoadstools
Okay, no, I remember. That scene in Pet Semetary with all the animals around the bed.
titantoadstools
childhood scare
