Hmm, yeah, I'm not sure if I can name any movies that scare me, exactly, but one of my absolute favorite horror movies is an obscure, little known movie called Dust Devil. It's weird and eerie and IDK, just different and I really dig it.
in more modern films, I was really struck by Under The Shadow, although honestly idek if it's a horror film so much as an extremely unsubtle supernatural allegory for war
Also I really enjoy Wake Wood, an Irish horror movie that while it does have unpleasantness with animals, it's not gratuitous, it's connected to the plot. But it's one of my favorite 'came back wrong' and 'creepy little town' takes.
The Circle. It's not marketed as a horror film in any way, but it creeps me right the fuck out because we're so close to that actual level of technology. And Antiviral because it's an extremely creepy slow burn horror movie. (It does have some very gross and/or upsetting scenes in it, tho.)
I think ones that manage to scare me have to get to some of the specific stuff that scares me- an unknown intruder in my house that I'm unaware of, taxidermy or other weird animals speaking in human voices
Oh, and Room 1408. It deviates so much from the original short story but that only does it favors, imo. Beautiful pacing, gorgeous effects, eerie visuals, great cast....
I like the original Grudge (that one is super incredibly good and ALSO frightening), The Thing, 28 days later, a bunch of cheesy ones like the Nightmare on Elm Street series/Tremors/Critters, 9 is a horror movie idc what anyone says, The Ritual, Halloween 2018 is a favorite
sneaky plane
The middle third of Annihilation is DEEPLY unsettling and extremely good, its one of the only movies that's ever given me nightmares, I just wish the beginning and end didn't fucking suck
Tho I will say, the only film that has ever given me actual nightmares is Willy Wonka. To the point that I couldn't even watch the promos for the remake. (Mostly this is because the first time I watched it was at exactly the wrong time in my life to do so.)
Jurassic Park is extremely good. I was obsessed with them as a kid and 3 was my favorite when I was... probably too young to be enjoying raptors breaking necks that much
Hitchcock's "The Birds" is disturbing if ya don't watch the end. the film, overall, is scary - but the ending is so stupid it manages to undo all the legit-scary that precedes it. it's the last 15 minutes at most tho, probably less - if ya can stop before the insipid ending, it's great as a psychological horror.
[cw: mental illness, ig?] either everyone everywhere just. unanimously silently-agreed to remove the cringe-ending I thought I'd seen, or the ending I remember wasn't real in the first place. :Ua
(my money's on "I managed to hallucinate a scene" cause I have done that with several films I first watched as a kid & then rewatched years later)
