McCovid Hey Plurk. Mcdonalds, Burger King, and other fast food restaurants are arguing they are essential, putting thousands of US employees and customers at risk. Trump is supporting this. Bad PR is our only defense. Shame On Mcdonalds

i used to eat more fast food than i should but this is the reason i've decided not to get even takeout from these guys

Unemployment expansions can't help if someone in your household is forced to go to work for a nonessential service
ʟɨօռ ɦɛǟʀƭɛɖ
Cash handling is terrifying and should be limited as much as humanly possible!
Pasta and Sin
Lockdowns can't help if someone in your household is forced to go to work for nonessential services. In fact, they mean absolutely nothing
𝕁υѕт мєℓσ∂ιє
McDonald also chose to shut down willingly in France
𝔞𝔪𝔟𝔢𝔯 𝔢𝔪𝔟𝔯𝔞𝔠𝔢
??? they're drive-thru and pickup only down here so whaaaaaat-
𝕁υѕт мєℓσ∂ιє
It feels like the issue on a larger scale is how toxic work culture is in the US.
WAO SUGOI!!!!
I think they're all delivery only here
Pasta and Sin
But even delivery and drive thru services are inherently dangerous in situations like these. Even if you don't pass money, all orders and payments are made online, and food is passed through a sally port system, there is still the inherent danger of your own coworkers.
Pasta and Sin
You can't run a store with one person. You can't run a store with just one household. You are no longer distancing yourselves.
𝕁υѕт мєℓσ∂ιє
I can at least see a case being made about deliveries being important in the case of people who don't have food / can't cook for some reason.
ʟɨօռ ɦɛǟʀƭɛɖ
many of the workers in fast food are a younger demographic meaning they are far more likely to be asymptomatic as well
ʟɨօռ ɦɛǟʀƭɛɖ
that could be contact with thousands of people in a day, contact that goes from their hands into your mouth
ʟɨօռ ɦɛǟʀƭɛɖ
many of the areas under lockdown have already begun establishing food and meal distribution services on a state or county level for the elderly and disabled
ʟɨօռ ɦɛǟʀƭɛɖ
the argument the companies are making is that the healthcare staff cannot continue to perform their jobs efficiently without a McCafe Beverage to start their day or fuel their lunch break
Pasta and Sin
Hospitals have cafeterias. Hospitals have coffee makers. Is it as good as McDonalds? No. But deal with it
N ᴇ ᴛ ʜ ◈◇◇
a lot of places around here have gone drive-thru or curb pick-up only, with no allowances of cash, which is a reasonable precaution... but like jeez
big 🛌 energy
I understand that but on the other hand, as someone with an autoimmune disorder that causes my immune system to attack my own joints, if I'm having a day where I can't carry a grocery bag out of the store and instacart is booked solid (as it has been for over a week now- no service available) then having food delivery options means I get to eat.
N ᴇ ᴛ ʜ ◈◇◇
^ yeah
ʟɨօռ ɦɛǟʀƭɛɖ
my wife has psoriatic arthritis too, I have diabetes. that also means we're all more likely to get it and more likely to be dangerously ill when we do
N ᴇ ᴛ ʜ ◈◇◇
I'm also trying to avoid elevators as much as possible so getting heavy groceries, and carrying them 4 flights is not happening. I think if it's possible to keep drive-thrus open safely (and allow people to walk through them), use credit/debit only, etc, it would be nice to keep them as an option
N ᴇ ᴛ ʜ ◈◇◇
but only if it's safe
𝕁υѕт мєℓσ∂ιє
I don't think anyone's arguing they should close. Just that keep deliveries as an option is understandable and very handy for a lot of people who have no other choices to eat.
𝕁υѕт мєℓσ∂ιє
that they shouldn't*
ʟɨօռ ɦɛǟʀƭɛɖ
yeah the point is there are no perfect outcomes here
Seda
I know in NY we've got all restaurants and bars listed as essential to help small businesses stay afloat. yes this does let the big chains keep operating too, but from what I've seen everyone's taking precautions (drive up/take out only, card/digital pay only)
ʟɨօռ ɦɛǟʀƭɛɖ
it's going to suck for someone no matter what but if we can't slow the spread (and keep people alive) it's not going to matter in the long run
Seda
which...frankly I think is better than everyone crowding into grocery stores. but yeah, there is no perfect solution.
N ᴇ ᴛ ʜ ◈◇◇
personally I like buying like 10 mcd's plain cheeseburgers and keeping them in the fridge for up to 4 days. keep them wrapped and dump them in the microwave between 26-34 seconds and they reheat pretty damn well
N ᴇ ᴛ ʜ ◈◇◇
a lot of times that was how I'd manage to get a good chunk of my daily protein
Subarashii
There were concerns about how the funding mechanism for a bill that would require employers to provide 14 days of paid sick leave to employees would impact franchisees' financials. lbr that's what this really boils down to
ʟɨօռ ɦɛǟʀƭɛɖ
if it was card only, delivery only so your only social interaction is the like 3 people in the kitchen with you I wouldn't be so mad but........ that's not what we're talking about here
Subarashii
again, I agree that delivery/fast food might be the only way some people are able to get food right now, but let's also not pretend this is about then and not all about how mega corps freaked out over maybe having to pay their employees actual wages
ʟɨօռ ɦɛǟʀƭɛɖ
and yeah it's 100% because paying employees reasonable wages is a joke in the US
HOT TURKEY TAKE
yeah it's... there's no good option here because, as always, evil is exploiting the "sane" option for their own gain
N ᴇ ᴛ ʜ ◈◇◇
yeah :/
HOT TURKEY TAKE
so your choices: let people starve, or let people die to the plague so that the foodhavers can gain a few extra numbers on their bank account

so honestly yeah, the best way is to put them publically on blast and try not to use any of the franchises listed if possible

god I clicked a link and mcdonalds is trying to pretend they're pushing back against the sick pay bill for 'small businesses'
sentient gate
I just ordered some burger king but I've been hypo all day and can't see to actually cook a food. I try not to get fast food much at all and I feel bad now
sentient gate
Well. It's not so much the blindness as it is the low but lack of depth perception sucks and I don't wanna cut off fingers
sentient gate
But I'll try not to use them regularly if at all after this
♔ carrot king
tbh... I mean, if you can't cook... fast food is maybe essential...
sentient gate
Yeah, if I were still living in a hotel it would be, no kitchen facilities. I mean I can usually throw a stir fry together but not when my blood sugar's messed up lol. But I'm sure there are plenty of people who can't cook for one reason or another
E.S. Levi
Another one here who frequently can't cook. I have a hypermobility condition that causes frequent joint pain, and pushing through it risks things like pulled muscles from simple, daily activities.
E.S. Levi
That said, if someone is in such bad shape that they can't cook, they probably also aren't inclined to go to a restaurant in person.
E.S. Levi
Delivery is an essential service, dine-in is not.
Ri
... in PA, they have to justify it via this list that the Governor put out. if they don't fit, they have to close:
UPDATED 5:45pm, March 21, 2020 - Industry Operation ...
ʟɨօռ ɦɛǟʀƭɛɖ
that's a nice list! I heard an ad from the local car dealership group talking about how they're staying open during the lockdown just now too
Ri
Gamestop tried... they were immediately booted
Ri
there's a local dealership staying open too, but they are doing any sales via their website and delivering the vehicles to the buyer via chase car.
Ri
it's also because they do a lot in service and maintenance
Ri
IF it's the maintenance part of the dealership, they're allowed to remain open. people still wreck, still need new tires, still need oil changes and inspections.
ʟɨօռ ɦɛǟʀƭɛɖ
yeah no Szott's radio spot was encouraging people to come in buuuuuuut they can deliver a vehicle too you if coming in makes you uncomfortable
big 🛌 energy
agreeing with delivery over dine-in. i apologize, everything here has been shut down for everything but delivery/pick-up so i hadnt' realized they were still open in the restaurant portion in some places...
Pasta and Sin
Okay, I have to weigh in here now that I've calmed down enough to be sane and rational about this. I have several medical conditions that render me unable to cook some days. I have vertigo issues, joint issues, and medication issues. There are days that I cannot walk, let alone cook. That being said, I have planned extensively for those days.
Pasta and Sin
Even before COVID-19, I stocked my kitchen with things that are simple and easy. Things I can throw in the microwave or just eat out of the cupboard. I understand my limitations and planned for them accordingly.
Pasta and Sin
I'm not trying to start a fight. I'm really not. For some people who are living in places without kitchens, I do understand that food services are necessary. I'm only stating that there are alternative options if people are willing to look into them and are willing to prepare for them.
Pasta and Sin
Again, I'm not trying to start a fight. I'm just saying my peace and I'll see myself out.
Pasta and Sin
piece. I can type, I swear.
sentient gate
yes, there are, but not everyone has unlimited access to them. im definitely not in any way advocating eating fast food regularly, but sometimes it's just something easy enough and dependable enough for people to find useful
sentient gate
im also not trying to fight, just saying that everyone's level of "i can do this" varies day by day
ʟɨօռ ɦɛǟʀƭɛɖ
dine-in is closed in MI but that doesn't help the workers trapped in drive thru with no options but to go in and risk bringing it home to children or compromised family members or get fired and not have a place to live when the eviction ban lifts
Pasta and Sin
And yes, I completely agree with that! Hell, I'm just a guilty of sending out the wife for tacos when I just can't be assed to cook. But in times like this, safety has to come before convenient. Especially when the virus can live on the surfaces that food is put in and the bag it's delivered in.
ʟɨօռ ɦɛǟʀƭɛɖ
I've heard elsewhere that if fast food employees are considered essential for the survivability of something of these proportions then they should be paid accordingly, not barely minimum wage so they're desperately scrapping pennies to make it to the next paycheck
Pasta and Sin
Again, I'm not trying to fight. I'm just trying to understand, I guess? People with pre-existing conditions have such an increased rate of complications that I, personally, can't understand risking a delivery order. I might die. No McDonalds is worth that, to me.
ʟɨօռ ɦɛǟʀƭɛɖ
if this is what our country considers essential then why are these people, fast food workers, grocery clerks, cashiers, the ones that get the worst pay, no job security, horrible conditions
bitchin camaro
i am going to politely say that it is not necessary for you to understand why other people might need food delivered in order for you to continue taking the precautions that you feel are necessary
bitchin camaro
in a perfect world we would of course be able to stop food preparation and delivery
ʟɨօռ ɦɛǟʀƭɛɖ
unfortunately we don't have that option... unless we want to not have a home anymore
bitchin camaro
yup
bitchin camaro
i lost my food prep job because of this virus
ʟɨօռ ɦɛǟʀƭɛɖ
so when it's between endangering your life and the life of the people you love or ending up on the streets...... there's no good option
ʟɨօռ ɦɛǟʀƭɛɖ
I hope you're in a state that has expanded the unemployment options
bitchin camaro
i am! i've applied and am still waiting to hear back from them....the system's been swamped so it's understandable but.
bitchin camaro
i have a lot of mixed feelings about foodservice jobs during this time, as one might imagine.
Pasta and Sin
My apologies for the lose of your job. This wasn't meant to be a jab at you. I was just expressing my opinion and trying to understand other's opinions. I hope you hear back from them soon. Good luck.
E.S. Levi
Or endangering your life from the virus, or...endangering your life from starvation. I don't have a refrigerator that can hold a week of groceries, let alone a stockpile, and there are days I can barely even make it downstairs to answer the door, let alone mess around with dishes and everything that even microwaved dinners require.
E.S. Levi
So my options on those days are order in, or go hungry.
bitchin camaro
i didn't take it personally, i'm just thinking of my elderly customers who live alone and have difficulty cooking
E.S. Levi
Disabled, too. I'm fairly young, but have a degenerative joint condition that makes my joints suffer wear and tear much faster, and I live alone :c
bitchin camaro
some of them would come in for 3 meals a day
bitchin camaro
so if delivery shuts down...idk, i just really don't want to think too hard about it.
bitchin camaro
because the worst case scenarios are not something i want to dwell too long on.
E.S. Levi
No kidding...it's not really viable long-term to live purely off of stuff you don't have to prepare before eating.
sentient gate
yeah. being brittle type one as well as blind, im generally okay day to day. but days when i have a sudden low and dont happen to have any carby stuff with protein around to treat it adequately, sometimes i do genuinely need food delivered or id be in very bad straights
sentient gate
(and my current residence has a stovetop and nothing else for cooking, so its difficult, especially when low, to be able to just throw something in a pan to heat because most things require chopping at the very least)
sentient gate
and being blind...well. that takes a lot of spoons to begin with but when low it's really not something im able to reliably do
sentient gate
but im generally fine! it's maybe once i week i need a delivery, and i try to limit them as much as possible. but i worry for the elderly and those that are genuinely without the ability to cook regularly
sentient gate
that said, as a very poor person who's worked a lot of food service, of course i dont agree with the abysmal wages and conditions food service workers face
Becky
The thing being missed as of what I have read thus far is the truckers bringing food to our grocery stores have very few options of places to eat
Becky
these are often cross country huals
Becky
Taking food with them is next to impossible.
ʟɨօռ ɦɛǟʀƭɛɖ
I think the biggest problem here is that it's not people like you guys that are the issue. It's the thousands of perfectly healthy individuals that just think it's no big deal and they are entitled to their burgers and shakes and sitting on the back stoop of the house next to the local bar with a dozen of their buddies drinking
Becky
There is a problem with that being taken advantage of but the same problem happens when people go 'grocery shopping' every. single. day. But there IS a need for those interstate places if you want to keep stores stocked
ʟɨօռ ɦɛǟʀƭɛɖ
if it were only people that genuinely needed these services the contact would be massively limited but..... there are still so many people that are laughing the whole thing off
ʟɨօռ ɦɛǟʀƭɛɖ
and the big businesses are relying on their stupidity to squeeze money out of a populace that doesn't have it to give right now
Hyatt
maybe the government should level hefty fines against businesses that don't allow workers paid time off if they think they're sick
Hyatt
or close locations that violate that principle
E.S. Levi
I've heard of essential places giving workers hazard pay too, which is also good.
ʟɨօռ ɦɛǟʀƭɛɖ
my roommate works at McDonald's and even with her hours cut down right now today alone she served hundreds of people that just wanted fucking ice cream
E.S. Levi
And should really be a general thing.
Becky
There is definitely a problem with people taking it not seriously and it makes me angry too
sentient gate
and yeah, thats understandable to be upset about, but...a large population (or really, even a small one) is never going to follow ordinances properly. and it leads to the choice being necessary between shutting down completely and really hurting those that need it, and people just being turds
Becky
but that applies for people using grocery trip excuses to go to walmart or out every day to buy shit at their grocery store and. We still need truckers to eat, and we still need grocery stores open
Becky
(And I say that as a mom with a kid working in fucking walmart that people are abusing like crazy and a high risk husband.)
sentient gate
there arent any easy, one size fits all answers here, unfortunately. its a unique situation that could be better in lots of ways
ʟɨօռ ɦɛǟʀƭɛɖ
at the very least people in high risk households should have the option of PTO
Becky
Oh hell yes re: PTO for anyone in a high risk household.
Becky
and also to hazard pay tbf
ʟɨօռ ɦɛǟʀƭɛɖ
McDs told the roomie it doesn't matter that she lives with 2 high risk people. Even though she has PTO (not a lot but 5 years gets you something) she is not allowed to use it unless she herself is sick
Hyatt
"Stop & Shop is encouraging all associates who don’t feel well to stay at home." wonder if I can trust that
ʟɨօռ ɦɛǟʀƭɛɖ
A lot of places say that but will not offer any pto or sick pay of any kind.
ℓα∂у уєииєfєя
Yep. My place is saying to stay home, but my boss was upset when I was having system issues while doing a non-essential project, and wanted to make me come in.
E.S. Levi
Ughhhh, 'encouraging' employees to stay home if they're sick does absolutely nothing if you don't make it possible for them to do so >B|
𝓜𝒶𝑔𝑒𝓁𝒾𝓃𝑔༢࿔ྀુ*
w o w
ℓα∂у уєииєfєя
And I take the bus to work, so. :-) :-) :-)
E.S. Levi
And you know with a lot of places, they make it so hard to call out because they run a skeleton crew and keep the bare minimum number of employees for things to stay functional.
E.S. Levi
So one person calling out either forces someone else to work extra or leaves the people who are there scrambling to do two jobs at once.
E.S. Levi
(I used to work at exactly that kind of place. And I have gone into work sick because the symptoms appeared after the deadline for calling out.)
𝓜𝒶𝑔𝑒𝓁𝒾𝓃𝑔༢࿔ྀુ*
I have my fiancee but I've got degenerative joint disease in my lumbar and cervical spine, fibromyalgia, and some weird cerebral malfunction, now. I'm glad my girl's been snagging canned soups and stuff. Being disabled sucks right now, esp. with a broken arm.
E.S. Levi
Oof, yeah...a broken arm makes it pretty much impossible to function without help.
E.S. Levi
Also, degenerative joint disease+fibro brofist, except not because I'd probably dislocate my wrist.
𝓜𝒶𝑔𝑒𝓁𝒾𝓃𝑔༢࿔ྀુ*
l-lol Flappy hand heys? XD
𝓜𝒶𝑔𝑒𝓁𝒾𝓃𝑔༢࿔ྀુ*

...Yeah, gentle ones.
𝓜𝒶𝑔𝑒𝓁𝒾𝓃𝑔༢࿔ྀુ*

E.S. Levi
Because genetics is a crapshoot?
sentient gate
Gentle waving motions from the frozen shoulder person. I realize it's not nearly on the same level but my dominant arm has been getting progressively useless and ouchy, it is le suck
E.S. Levi
Hey, not everyone has the dexterity to be able to learn to use their off hand effectively...
E.S. Levi
And even if you do, it's still something that takes practice, not something that magically happens just because your dominant arm stops working right.
𝓜𝒶𝑔𝑒𝓁𝒾𝓃𝑔༢࿔ྀુ*
I broke my dominant arm. lmao
𝓜𝒶𝑔𝑒𝓁𝒾𝓃𝑔༢࿔ྀુ*
Cuz that's how my luck is. XD

Yuck. Pinched nerves are p. brutal.
𝓜𝒶𝑔𝑒𝓁𝒾𝓃𝑔༢࿔ྀુ*
I constantly pinch the ones in my neck.

Ptriciadactyl
Bodies were a mistake: the most relatable. I feel envy every time I read a scifi novel where someone had artificial nerves to replace his actual nerves. I'm ready for my cyborg body.
Ptriciadactyl
I'm lucky that my current med combo is working wonders so I can prep food, but with no grocery deliveries available until April, I would probably be living on fast food deliveries now if my mother hadn't come in to drive me to the grocery store.
Ptriciadactyl
so... I can understand that there are populations for whom the service is essential. But I really wish people wouldn't abuse them and expose the employees more than necessary.
E.S. Levi
I'm dreading needing more groceries, since I can't drive and shopping in person is...well, it'd be easier if I could ever get a motorized cart.
Hyatt
is there anyone you could ask to help you?
Hyatt
I already shop and prepare meals for someone, so I've also helped with shopping for other neighbors for this
ʟɨօռ ɦɛǟʀƭɛɖ
a lot of communities have organized assistance programs for children and disabled adults
E.S. Levi
Transport isn't a problem, but my legs are bad.
Ptriciadactyl
I managed to schedule a grocery delivery for 4/2, so I just need to completely revise it the day before to reflect what's actually in stock by then.
Ptriciadactyl
Good luck, I hope you find a way to restock your pantry.
Hyatt
can you ask a neighbor to shop for you?
E.S. Levi
Don't know any of them, except my mother across the street, who also has bad knees.
StupidSexyV⚠der
E.S. Levi : I'm not trying to be nosey but I'm in the Cincinnati Ohio area. I'm willing to do a shop for people. maybe plurk/facebbok/twitter/etc could help you find someone?
E.S. Levi
I do know a couple people in the general city area...the one closest to me also doesn't drive, but. There are others.
StupidSexyV⚠der
see if one of then will embrace the lessons of mr. rogers.
E.S. Levi
Yeah. It's not urgent, at least. (And, thankfully, I had plenty of TP when this all started.)
StupidSexyV⚠der
luckily! i. i did not.
E.S. Levi
Oof...
Hyatt
my neighbor didn't, either. luckily a combination of going shopping early plus the store imposing limits per customer meant I was able to pick up an 18-pack to share
E.S. Levi
Neither did my mother, but I let her know I had extra if she couldn't find any and she hasn't messaged me about it, so...hopefully she got some.
Jay
I had ot mail some to my kids in LA
