alex is a genius
ULTROHAZARDOUS🐙
1) that seems like a good way to make a book unreadable. like wouldn't the pages fall out of the binding? 2) I suspect this is a troll tweet 3) either way the reaction to it is way overblown
ᴍᴏʙ.
It’s a bad idea bc without a back/front cover the book will get munched or fall apart! Wouldn’t recommend!
ULTROHAZARDOUS🐙
then again, I have little patience for book nerds who are less interested in reading than they are in treating books like sacred objects
ᴍᴏʙ.
However I don’t give a single shit about the morality of slicing up a book
You're Quinner
but siz you need to SMELL the book
ULTROHAZARDOUS🐙
see: the wank a few years ago when someone used old books to make neat little paper sculptures
You're Quinner
if you cant smell the book then it's not a BOOK
You're Quinner
or I guess I should address that to neb
You're Quinner
either way I agree that it's dumb
✶ 𝐇𝐨𝐇𝐨𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐨!
neb is correct
✶ 𝐇𝐨𝐇𝐨𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐨!
books are words on paper who cares

A while back I tried to look up if there was an ebook version of House of Leaves
You're Quinner
I couldn't find any straight answers
✶ 𝐇𝐨𝐇𝐨𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐨!
consume the book if you must
✶ 𝐇𝐨𝐇𝐨𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐨!
that feels correct for what i know of house of leaves
You're Quinner
just pages and pages of people going YOU HAVE TO TOUCH THE BOOK WITH YOUR FACE YOU CAVE CREATURE

EBOOKS ARE RUINING AMERICA
ULTROHAZARDOUS🐙
like... good argument against e-books: treating books as a subscription service that can be revoked at any moment by publishers is bad, actually, for several reasons beyond the scope of a goofy shitpost plurk
bad argument against e-books: yOu hAVe tO SMeLl iT
You're Quinner
"so, no?" "YOU'RE A FAILURE OF A READER FOR ASKING, I UN-ASK YOUR QUESTION"
✶ 𝐇𝐨𝐇𝐨𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐨!
treating physical books as the only correct way to Consume Knowledge is so classist and ableist lol
✶ 𝐇𝐨𝐇𝐨𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐨!
LIKE NOT TO INTRODUCE THE DISCOURSE TO THIS ULTIMATELY SILLY DISCUSSION
✶ 𝐇𝐨𝐇𝐨𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐨!
BUT LIKE: IT IS
You're Quinner
the only time I actively get mad about it is when people compare shit like this to nazi book burnings
ULTROHAZARDOUS🐙
yeah like... e-books, as a concept, are great, and helpful for so many people. I just have Concerns about how e-books are treated by major publishers and distributors
🎄ndrusi
I just want to point out that he turned Infinite Jest into two shorter books titled Infinite and Jest
ULTROHAZARDOUS🐙
but it's impossible to have a nuanced conversation about it without some idiot with a paper fetish mucking it up
✶ 𝐇𝐨𝐇𝐨𝐇𝐨𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐨!
mood as hell lmao
cranberry sauce
I prefer physical copies just because the eyestrain isn't as bad and because they're more permanent, but like
cranberry sauce
ebooks are not ~RUINING AMERICA
cranberry sauce
there's a huge argument to be made in their favor in terms of portability/accessibility
cranberry sauce
that said this is a stupid as hell idea that would cut the lifespan of your book
cranberry sauce
just get a fuckin ebook
ULTROHAZARDOUS🐙
this is what makes me think this is a joke tweet
kamikasei
I strongly dislike deliberate damage or careless treatment of physical books and finding out someone did this would lower my opinion of them.
Happy Hogswatch
and there's also, what if you're out reading and you get to the part you sliced the book? You just gotta fucking wait until you get home to finish
Happy Hogswatch
and the midsection is usually when you really do not want to interrupt your reading
Princess Emily
what if they cut it in half the other way then
ULTROHAZARDOUS🐙
Except for Infinite Jest, which, as 🎄ndrusi pointed out, has been cleverly divided into two separate books: Infinite, and Jest
You're Quinner
now that's innovation
You're Quinner
just read the top half of each page
Princess Emily
exactly
ULTROHAZARDOUS🐙
oh, that's clever. you made the book more portable without damaging the binding
ULTROHAZARDOUS🐙
problem solved!
Rabbit Crimes
yeah I’m assuming this is a troll tweet but regardless
Rabbit Crimes
>books are not sacred and art made from books is actually pretty cool
>books are still bound to the laws of physics and logic
>I prefer physical books due to not requiring batteries or recharging but I also have a shitload of ebooks, several of which I bought at the same time as a physical copy of said book to ensure I always have it on me fuck the haters
$windle clau$
assuming this isn't a joke it's actually brilliant and people bitching about how others treat their own copies of mass produced, cheaply put together books need to go outside and feel one spf
Love Snake Kaja
I'll admit I winced at this, but it's not exactly a grave crime
Rama
I was about to go full-blown ragefest myself but like, in a way where I'm aware I'm playing things up for internet drama
Rama

It's brilliant but makes me deeply uncomfortable

In the same way that a whole watermelon with all the rind peeled off does

"This makes sense but I shouldn't be seeing it with my human eyeballs"
Rama
Seriously though those would fall apart almost immediately.
Lightning Bolt
I'm lawful/neutral good with some true neutral
Lightning Bolt
more true neutral now that it's easier to get ebooks of English books in Taiwan than the physical versions
Lightning Bolt
actually where does "ebook on laptop" fall here
RobotApocalypse
re: house of leaves, i suspect the reason there's no e-book is because there's a lot of formatting fuckery that would make it difficult to translate into digital form without just converting a bunch of pages into images
You're Quinner
yeah that's what I figured but people could just like
You're Quinner
say that, on the internet
You're Quinner
instead of pages and pages of smuglords
You're Quinner
abouot how ebooks are MISSING THE POINT of book
RobotApocalypse
it's also harder to follow the multi-page footnotes if you have to scroll down to each new one, while in a physical book you can just put your finger between the pages you need to return to and flip forward
RobotApocalypse
lol yeah House of Leaves fans are an obnoxious bunch like that
You're Quinner
ereaders tend to have a back button for footnotes
RobotApocalypse
there's actual practical reasons they could cite but nah, let's be weird and elitist about it instead
RobotApocalypse
oh do they? i admit i actually don't do ebooks but only because i haven't gotten around to it yet and not for any ideological reason
You're Quinner
usually it puts all the footnotes at the end of the book and the footnote is just a link to that page
You're Quinner
with a link from there back to where you were
RobotApocalypse
ohhh hm
You're Quinner
I gather a substantial problem would be color
You're Quinner
which not all ebook formats support
RobotApocalypse
yeah idk if that would work well for House cuz it has like, a lot of footnotes, and some of them are just quick little nothing citations and some of them are 5-page long diatribes from the character who pieced the book together from the trunk full of scraps he found it in
RobotApocalypse
color might not be an issue actually, there are multiple different print versions of the book
RobotApocalypse
yeah there's full color, 2-color, and b&w versions, according to the copyright page on my copy
You're Quinner
either way I'm not hugely invested in whether or not I can read House of Leaves practically
You're Quinner
it sounds like too much work
You're Quinner
it's just an example
RobotApocalypse
i actually love it and think it's worth reading, but, it is a lot of effort to read, yeah
RobotApocalypse
moreso if you actually need to track down a physical copy to do so and then lug it around when you don't normally lug books around
RobotApocalypse
anyway. i don't like, judge people for not reading physical books, there's no magical quality to them that makes them better than text on a screen
RobotApocalypse
and people who act like there is are being big dumb babies
cranberry sauce
I'll also admit this:
cranberry sauce
yes, I do sometimes buy books just because the cover is pretty and I want to have it be decorative
cranberry sauce
I usually do this when I already know what's in said book, like I have a really pretty copy of Hans Christian Andersen's stuff
cranberry sauce
95% of my collection is pure function though
cranberry sauce
if a book is in the public domain I also highly recommend you just Gutenberg it
cranberry sauce
or otherwise get it for free
cranberry sauce
a lot of the reason I tend to go for physical books is me just not being a big fan of DRM + formatting weirdness + the idea that a lot of retailers of digital goods can just decide you don't actually own what you bought
cranberry sauce
but other than the formatting weirdness, that's more of an issue with capitalism/publishers than ebooks themselves
RobotApocalypse
yeah the DRM is the big problem, and also the fact that you need the correct app to read the contents of the book you ostensibly own, so like, fuck you if 30 years down the line nobody supports the format all your e-books are in anymore
RobotApocalypse
that's just a problem you'll never have to face with paper books
RobotApocalypse
but on the other hand, there's a lot to be said for the convenience of carrying an entire library in your pocket
cranberry sauce
yeah that's basically my take
cranberry sauce
also I have never fuckin smelled a book
cranberry sauce
like
cranberry sauce
I know what books smell like
cranberry sauce
but I've never actually given a shit
Lightning Bolt
I do feel it's easier to flip through paper books than e-readers if you're looking for a specific scene and can't remember specifics
dragon time
It's cheaper to drop a real book in the bathtub
dragon time
But also I can't get most fanfiction on real books
dragon time
It's a tough choice
