Dust BY DORIANNE LAUX
Someone spoke to me last night,
told me the truth. Just a few words,
but I recognized it.
I knew I should make myself get up,
write it down, but it was late,
and I was exhausted from working
all day in the garden, moving rocks.
Now, I remember only the flavor —
not like food, sweet or sharp.
More like a fine powder, like dust.
And I wasn’t elated or frightened,
but simply rapt, aware.
That’s how it is sometimes —
God comes to your window,
all bright light and black wings,
and you’re just too tired to open it.

Summary: Aziraphale
Crowley

Like something that once was holy, settling, beautifully burnt."

Watching someone go from dry eyed to crying is a heartbreaking experience. Every small detail is a kick to the gut. The first thing you see in this experience is the loss of tempo in the rise and fall of the person’s chest as their breathing becomes jagged. At that same moment, the previously silent movement of air starts to get louder.
Then the person’s brows and cheeks start to twitch, as if they can sense distress but are terrifyingly uncertain of its origin. The final nail in the coffin is what happens to the eyes. Slowly, but far too quickly at the same time, the eyes get glossier. Water starts to build up against the lower lashes and then, when the tension breaks, it spills.
It runs across skin and there is no more plausible deniability; you’re watching someone cry.

There are no words to describe the emotional ramifications of each of these details.

This is the same heartbreaking experience that Aziraphale faced in the late night silence of a Mayfair flat.
