this sounds really interesting, but it looks like the only thing you need to do to get this in your textures is to change to bilinear resampling when you size down. and also possibly that they are mip mapping the 1024 images so they end up looking like 512 and 512 looking like 256

and while there are some advantages to working large and scaling down, you use the wrong sampling algorithm (the default sampling algorithm is designed to "blur" more so text also works) and you lose them, you would get sharper results simply working in the original size.
