[Medication/Heat Warning!] https://images.plurk.com/4tBePvuv5lQo8yybQxz6wE.jpg Hey! Take a look at this list and see if your medication is on there. This is a list of common meds that can make you more susceptible to heat stroke. Take care of yourself out there, and watch out for each other.

I am posting this again this year because MASSIVE HEAT WAVE INCOMING!!!
Angry Popoto
Check your meds, drink your water, get electrolytes in your system, and be aware of how you may potentially be reacting to heat/sunlight!!!
Wolfy
im already feelin the heat oof
JaySherman
Yeah, I'm on that list. That reminds me I gotta get drinks for work.

Also to my fellow trans folks: You will feel significantly hotter on T than you used to, and conversely you will tend to get chilly easier if you have started E/T-blockers. If this is your first year on HRT, pay careful attention to your body, because you have an entirely new normal to adjust to!
mydeimos.
The heat wave has hit here already and I felt the warning signs earlier today and am on two of these so: be careful and keep an eye on yourselves out there!
최민호
Wow I literally had this happen to me today
최민호
I have three on this list
ChickletLARP
I thought if my new ones were on here that could explain how sick I got the other week, but pretty sure I'm not taking any of those. >.<
Angry Popoto
ChickletLARP : check the classes of them, or talk to your pharmacist to see if they have any sun/heat-related side effects!
ChickletLARP
Maybe. I just got so sick the other day >.< Went out for birthday stuff and wound up in the health services area for almost half the time we were there
Angry Popoto
Def talk to your pharm then!
Prickly Android
My daughter’s med is on there, I’ll have to keep an eye on her when she goes outside to play.

Oh man, I feel slightly better about an incident last year where my 75 year old dad was FINE but I was DYING. (I am sure i was in no real danger but this explains it.)
🍉🐯Ⲧⲓԍᴇʀ𝑠Ⲃʟⲟⲟᴅ🍧🍓
hm good to know. I'm taking a couple meds on that list...
L'fuckingChaim
that is far from the most extensive list I've seen, and I'm on 3 and counting. I hate...degrees. need fewer of them.
Pen Again
It's so easy for it to happen too. We were chasing around and just sitting in the sun in an otherwise air conditioned car was making me overheat. I used to never
brave vespaeria
i'm only on one of these but i think it has mainly slightly curtailed my sweating
brave vespaeria
which is... a perk because i still sweat enough to be an effective cooling mechanism. thank god
Melted🥵Ver
God damn it, I started one of these a bit over a month ago and I'm already pretty heat intolerant as a baseline

got all relieved that I no longer take one of the meds on the list, only to look further up and see the one that replaced it betrayed me

❝ D a t a ❞ : Ah, more information! Thank you!
❝ D a t a ❞
you're welcome! I thought it was important to know
big bad wolb
i brought this issue up with my psychiatrist the other day, and she advised that if i know im going out on a hot day, to pregame with a bunch of electrolytes such as gatorade or pedialyte, and then refill with water as needed

I also just found this article specifically about avoiding heat stroke if you're going to be outdoors

my kids are going to Pride today so I thought it was good to share
starboy.
thank you for this, seriously! i had no idea, thought i was just being a weenie about the heat recently when there was a heat wave and felt like dying at work
Angry Popoto
❝ D a t a ❞ : Ahhhh, I wish that I could pin comments to the top!!

Hi everyone, heat stroke is important to watch out for, but please remember that you may be more susceptible to getting sunburns as well. remember your sunscreen as well as hydrating. :-)

and if you want a damn fine neck fan this is the one. I was comfortable in Florida heat with this bad boy and it lasted the entire day from rope drop to close at Disney World. https://www.amazon.com/...

i've basically used it all the time since and it's really helped a lot with my overheating issues.

This is no joke. I discovered the hard way on a beach vacation that sunscreen does not work because of my medication (cymbalta).
BIKE ZELDA
I cannot stress it enough: if you are able, wear a hat with a brim when you go outside! or use an umbrella! this will help block dangerous UV rays
BIKE ZELDA
in addition to wearing sunscreen, light clothes, and staying hydrated, having a hat or umbrella to shade your head will help you avoid heat- and sun stroke

^^ also regarding light clothes: remember natural fibers like cotton or linen are your friend. Polyester and nylon and other synthetic are not. If you're Business, I know it's hard with these clothes especially, but try to find options in your closet that are going to let your skin breathe
TeaMergency
Most business collared shirts are cotton, never commute wearing your blazer, and I've had luck with thinly woven drapey polyester pants. No tight clothing 👍
TeaMergency
Even some skincare products increase your UV susceptibility so read the fine print and sunscreen it up

I commented the last time this was posted to add that blood pressure and heart medications, including beta blockers and ACE inhibitors (I take both), have heat intolerance as a side effect. Diabetes medications, antifungals, antibiotics, diuretics, ADHD meds, and allergy meds are all suspect also

Not an exhaustive list but some more niche examples:
8 Types of Medications That Don’t Mix With Heat
Angry Popoto
I am keeping my comments minimal this time to try and ensure that all of the additional information that others are providing stays easily available. And remember that if you're not sure if your medication will have adverse effects or not, you can always consult with your pharmacist!
Rizu
that AARP link isn't working for me, but something that hasn't been mentioned that some of us might be on for various reasons is birth control medication, specifically the pill has sun sensitivity as a symptom so be careful if you're taking it, and especially if you're taking more than one medication that can cause it since the effects can be multiplicative
Angry Popoto
^^^ A good addition!
Angry Popoto
You know, after posting this three years in a row, you’d think that I might have enough sense to take my own advice
Angry Popoto
At least I remembered it soon enough to get myself inside before I started getting too dizzy
