I love covers. A lot. A LOT! So I was listening to this and thinking how I've always been amazed at this version of a modern band doing a traditional song. It's a fun video too. I've been to that party! Give me a fairly modern band doing a traditional song in a way that you love. Please.
Way back when I was still in college, the radio station I listen to also featured a segmeny featuring the original song and the newer usually more famous version. So I like listening to 2 versions of songs too... I live how PostModern Jukebox makes modern songs sound like they're from the 1930's-60's
My favorite album by Metallica is Garage Inc - all covers. It's very interesting to find how some songs shine in completely new lights in other genre. From the top of my head - punk song as a metal cover. New energy, I guess.
So in April last year, we were in Halifax for Kirby's surgery for 2 weeks right, the night of his surgery (still going, 14 hrs long) we went out to this pub that does live music, laura, justin and I, and the live music guy started playing Whiskey in the Jar and I had to stand up immediately and leave, who follows me but laura, both of us crying.
Walking out down the long blocks in Halifax at midnight in the pouring rain, crying because of Whiskey in the Jar. That's SUCH a song to us, Kirby plays it and Rollie plays it and it's such an east coast thing, it was the one time through the entire year that broke me down. And Laura. I'll never be able to listen to that again without crying.
One of my favorites isn't technically a cover. it's a reimagination plus lot's the same thing. it's called kandee by one Eskimo. I was just listening to it about 20 minutes ago
You all failed. And I had such high hopes! Not regular covers, covers of traditional songs. Like Whiskey in the Jar is at least 200 years old, maybe as much as 500 years. That's what I meant. Everyone stand in the corner!
There is the Foreverly album by Billie Joe Armstrong and Norah Jones doing a cover of the Everly Brothers who covered a bunch of old songs like Barbara Allen and Down in the Valley. Essentially a cover of covers.
Going to have to break out Diggy Diggy Hole to kill it.
