This is upsetting my engineer brain. In my house, the bathrooms & laundry room are directly above/below each other. Why would the plumbing for a washer be directly above this dude's bed?

Poor design?

Depends. In the house I live in the flats are rather small on ground level, and at 4th level they are rather big (and less of them). And they are cut REALLY differently, so bathrooms and stuff are not stacked.

My house was designed and build with a bathroom planned upstairs at the front above the hall and toilet. The drain was actually build in the side-wall of the house (all bricks) but then the bathroom was move to the back, above the rear of the long hallway, with all the tubing open, visible in the hall.

Plans change.
