so far it's neat! it's got a like...attack on titan + innsmouth setup - big fishy monsters from the sea attacking civilization that has big fuckin walls up to slow it down
i'm only 100 pgs in so its mostly been setup of a murder/assassination plot to destabilize things, but it's moving at a fair pace short chapters...what a marvel
just finished the tainted cup and it was fun!!!! loved the setting and peculiarities of the world, liked the chemistry between the sherlock/watson expies, the mystery was fun to see unravel i'm not usually a big mystery person but the setting made it fun also the monsters are fucked up which is great
yaa i enjoyed it lots c: sounds like he's gonna make more in the setting? which i look fwd to, cuz im into it, show me more weird shit and funny little guys
it was fine if forgettable in its derivative nature until we get to this story written by a 1996 author trying to make a kind o f sequel to the call of cthulhu and my man just HAD to continue the fine legacy of racism
wow legrasse ur just sooooo cool and manly for throwing dynamite at a deep one and now u wanna go be an eldritch hunter? fuck outta here with this catharsis
happy to say that the other stories following that one were nowhere near as infuriating- in fact some were fun!!! i have 2 left to read and then im done i doubt ill ever read these again thooo loool
idk about this one lmao book of daniel is kind of giving me a hard time...i think the way it's written is supposed to evoke the biblical daniel? visions and dreams and shit butlike
there's no chapter breaks, it jumps from first to third to other scenes with no warning, drops an entire thought or scene to talk about historically what was happening
it's not BAD like the content is interesting it's just hard for me to keep up with when im reading about this guy being fucking weird to his wife and then suddenly it'sa bout his childhood and then his grandma and then a dinner years later within like 5 pages
Book of Daniel has vastly improved in part two The scenes are more cohesive and the pivots make more sense I'm really liking this frantic descriptive energy of spaces and places
finished! it was a strange, twisty road and it ended with a kind of heavy "woof" at the end...but i think i'm glad i read it? i like the way doctorow can paint a scene, even if MC wasn't my favorite (the misogyny...woooooof)
finished The Gargoyle interesting odyssey...it kind of made me think of the tim burton movie big fish? in that it had lots of sweeping feelings and vignettes and a kind of...touristy vibe to the plot-moving motif-defining characters
it felt a little TOO touristy at times but i did also enjoy the playing with fonts and diversion into second-person as the secondary character told stories about the main character
it's extremely......romance movie coded but fucked up too very visceral writing, esp for addiction and injury, so it'd be a hard sell to people who would squick at burns/hospitals or drug addiction
I've finished contact imminent as of last night and it was pretty good! However Every single time a character entered a scene I had to hear about their clothes It was like my immortal
But overall an interesting world build! I liked the dynamics of characters and how varied their chemistries were I have a feeling this authors series suffers from poor covers bc the vibes do NOT match the writing at all It was way more pensive than the cover sells
I'm at the car dealership for service rn so I've started the devourer below So far is a prohibition bootlegging tale with some spookies Decent pace no huge complaints
ok THIS anthology is wayyyyyyyyyyyyy better than chtulhu cycle by miles the shared setting but differnet stories is playing really well and the writing is way better
devourer was great fun! i liked the shared setting a lot and how very like...comic book/pulpy the setups/flows were to everything no annoying tropes or need to throw in the worst flavors of the era it was all written in either U CAN DO THAT, CTHULHU CYCLE WRITERS. U CAN DO THAT.
