...........this explains why i have the random giant housefly every now and then when the temperature rises a little, LIKE, I KNEW THAT I WOULD SEE FLIES WHEN IT GOT WARMER, but i didn't think to suspect....... drains or walls
the big ones i usually just toss outside... it's the phorid flies that are hellish
ftr in general when it comes to flies etc that breed in drains, vinegar/hot water/etc usually doesn't destroy the biofilm the larvae live in so the best way to eradicate is dismantle pipe and scrub with soap and water
i did that for my phorid infestation + used a regular drain cleaning stick from then on and haven't had issues. big flies usually just come in through the ac unit box when it's warm though
we had drain flies recently (which are smaller/possibly different to get rid of but) and pouring boiling water was indeed a good temporary fix, though the thing that got rid of them for good was just clearing out the drain manually with a cleaning stick followed by some draino for good measure
please also be very careful mixing Drano and vinegar because they're a base and an acid so it will probably get very exothermic, make sure you rinse stuff with water very very thoroughly in between if you use both
The only things you can do is a) kill the fuckers (we vacuumed them off the ceiling because they are slower and stupider than house flies) 2) try to find where they are getting in. This may not be possible if it's the foundation. You can outlast them tho
ASH, HELLO, I was linked to this. I've been having the same problem for m o n t h s. You probably have attic flies, yes, but they do not bite or feed (much) on rotten food.
They're stupid and slow and love to fly aimlessly around, so hanging a literal dozen fly strips makes a significant dent in their numbers at the expense of being surrounded by thousands of dead flies. They're not attracted to light, so blue light traps/window stickies don't work.
i def gotta get fly strips after the new year, i tried to see if the bathroom drain was the issue by keeping the door shut all night and low and behold they were by the main room window and door, so they are IN THE VENTS/WALLS SOMEWHERE
