potato boyo
so
potato boyo
it's 4am and I'm awake. I did sleep a chunk tho.
potato boyo
Saturday I got a bunch of packages delivered. earlier in the week I panic ordered two bags of litter (25lb ea) not realizing that one was already ordered. all three got delivered on the same day, along with a case of cat food and some deodorant and Tylenol.
potato boyo
Sunday, my helper guy came over. I gave him a package locker code and warned him about all the heavy stuff, he said no problem, he would make two trips.
potato boyo
note: a "feature" of our package locker system is that if you put in one code, it will sequentially open the lockers for every package waiting for you. no selectively picking up one small package and leaving the heavier ones for later. so only one code is needed.
potato boyo
I was doing other things when he went to get packages, and later heard the telltale ripping of boxes opening. didn't think much of it.
potato boyo
Monday night, I went looking for the case of cat food delivered. it's nowhere to be found. in looking, I noticed there was only one bag of litter. putting two and two together, it becomes clear that some of my package deliveries didn't make it into the lockers...
potato boyo
helper buddy didn't notice the discrepancy between what I had listed and what he found, and/or did but just didn't mention it to me.
potato boyo
end result: I had to go hunt down the missing packages and drag them up to the apartment myself. this left me in a not insignificant amount of pain.
potato boyo
further stress piled on in the form of a poorly timed phone call from my sister and unannounced fire alarm testing going off when I'm in the hallway.
potato boyo
(oh yeah and more packages had been delivered Monday so I got to lug those up as well)
potato boyo
Meanwhile, back at the hall of somethingorother
potato boyo
My fancy pants new computer that I put together? that worked great for about two and a half weeks and then suddenly up and died last week.
Deb425
potato boyo
troubleshooting pointed to a dead CPU, so I kicked off RMA proceedings. repacking it was a combination scavenger hunt and bar puzzle, then today (yesterday, aka Wednesday) I got a ride to the store to drop it off - they do Amazon returns at Petco now!
potato boyo
Along with Target shopping. I needed to pick up a refill at the pharmacy inside, then my ride and I did our usual loop of departments of interest. (I also picked up more cat food and a pink gift bag to put manly presents in).
potato boyo
Legs were sore from package hauling the previous day, so I was definitely feeling the extra walking today.
potato boyo
But then, while we were out, I got a phone call about the availability of toilet repair services, to which I said I'd be home by 3. I got home a little after 2, and set about washing dishes and scrubbing the toilet.
potato boyo
I had also gotten delivery notification of replacement parts for the dead computer, so had picked those up before heading in.
potato boyo
I rested for about a half an hour after cleaning, then hung out and observed repair work. rested for another half an hour or so, then set about putting in the new CPU+cooler. I was already pretty shot by that point but the anxiety over whether I had diagnosed the right issue was gnawing at me.
potato boyo
weirdly enough, this is one of the most physically taxing tasks.
potato boyo
standing while leaning forward, particularly when struggling to reach or manipulate a specific piece (aka plugging in a fan connector into a tight space) is awkward and poor ergonomics.
potato boyo
I was trying really hard to do the work without pulling the whole thing out of the case. as it was, the graphics card and its support bracket had already been yanked to take out the old parts. but leaving it in the case led to other challenges.
potato boyo
got everything in place, plugs plugged and screws screwed. I put the GPU and bracket back in only to realize I'd pinned its power cable underneath it - yank, rearrange, redo - and... moment of truth. flip that switch.
potato boyo
no change.
potato boyo
same two red error lights.
potato boyo
I slumped down in my chair, slipping into defeat's welcoming embrace, letting it cradle me like a lost child.
potato boyo
I don't know how long it was, 2 minutes maybe.
potato boyo
and the monitor suddenly lit up.
potato boyo
A black screen with a line of text warning about the detection of a new processor.
potato boyo
life.
potato boyo
Would have been the perfect moment for a flash of lightning behind me, but that probably would have fried the machine all over again, so.
Sometimes Bacon
this story has been such an adventure
potato boyo
I just realized I got some things out of order. but it doesn't really affect the whole thing that much.
potato boyo
I've been systematically haphazardly chipping away at this pile of stresses. the pile is getting smaller, but I'm feeling the effort take a toll.
potato boyo
I'm having to retrain myself to use a not-broken toilet. I don't have to hold the handle down anymore.
potato boyo
I will of course be holding my breath for the next two and a half weeks waiting for the new CPU to spontaneously die.
Sometimes Bacon
for the sake of your health, both physical and mental, i hope that it doesn't die
potato boyo
the motherboard return window is open til the end of January.
potato boyo
I still have other stuff that has not gotten done. I have to call back to schedule an ultrasound, then I have to cancel/reschedule the follow up appointment to discuss the results of the ultrasound. (if they try and schedule it before the end of the year I'm going to tell them to suck eggs)
potato boyo
I have to get labs, but I have to time that specifically in between doses of my every-other-week medication. again, not happening during the holiday gauntlet.
potato boyo
Oh, and all the cat food buying is due to the old lady being extra picky and turning her nose up at the usual flavors. she decided she liked one I brought home today, ate an entire bowl in short order and demanded a second can.
potato boyo
and threw up a bunch in the hallway. whee!
Chestnut
I wish I was there to help lift some of this off you. hang in there

rather stressful, mr.tato. i hope you get enough rest for your mind and body.

oh my heavens, little potato-chan I am so sorry. What a nasty train of events, no matter what the order. I too wish I could have helped in some way.
isle
that computer thing gave me extreme sad. But you did well, I hope it stays good for you, that's the worst.
potato boyo
I'm wondering if it isn't best to let it live on its side, and not test the structural integrity heatsink mounts and PCIe slots.
potato boyo
for those not up on the state of computer guts, a comparison
potato boyo
https://images.plurk.com/4GnasW8h7FG8zeVcMs5r7E.jpg this little metal square is the CPU itself.
potato boyo
https://images.plurk.com/2BUsa7JDIADSaDAd8gqGlO.jpg this massive heatsink and radiator monstrosity is what's used to cool the CPU.
potato boyo
https://images.plurk.com/4wkSZm8eFGXgz4mHc8UZCG.jpg it just barely fits in the case.
potato boyo
that whole mess is attached to a pair of brackets by two screws, and each of the brackets has two screws. which means those screws are how all the weight of this hangs off the motherboard when the tower is stood up.
potato boyo
even a little sag would potentially lessen contact between the CPU and heatsink, significantly compromising the chip cooling.
potato boyo
theoretically these things are designed to withstand the mechanical stresses placed on them, but I have gained new paranoia.
✨Skye
Oh no, Tato...this time of year just seems to magnify everything stressful doesn't it? I don't love this for you either.
