Roko "Roko's Basilisk" Lesswrong is the most twitter guy on twitter

moontouched
I read like the first sentence of this tweet and went "Yeah, I would expect this from the roko's basilisk guy"

moontouched
Full That's What I Thought You'd Say You Stupid Horse

Rama
This has come up in basically every science fiction series that's run more than two seasons

Rama
With the same results

Rama
And Roko, predictably, does not understand why human beings do things

Rama
Or why the middle like six seasons of Stargate were mid

EsperBot
He is literally proposing an episode of Star Trek where at the end Kirk destroys the system for being obviously monstrous

how hard can it be you just throw both militaries into Totally Accurate Battle Simulator and press play

Rama
Oh yeah I forgot that Star Trek originated it as a stock TV episode

BernieWiseman
Yeah, that philosophy goes back to the cold war with, "Computer worshiping idiots who don't understand people."

Rama
You just describes LessWrong's entire purpose as a community

Rama
That and doing the "Harry Potter and the Balance of Earth" gag from Futurama unironically

BernieWiseman
I didn't even know what LessWrong was

Quinneapolis
it's a commpunity of people who have created a cargo cult around being smart

Rama
None of them are smart, but they think they are, and they also think that thinking things make them true

Rama
Ipso facto,

BernieWiseman
That isn't smart though, that is "Up to date with technical trends, but has no common sense backing it."

BernieWiseman
I could say wars would better be ended by developing 50 foot tall robots, and having them fight for countries instead of countries going to war. At least that is the plot of a terrible movie from the 90's that I have watched too many times.

Quinneapolis
and also G Gundam

BernieWiseman
Yeah, but I think Robot Jox came out first

BernieWiseman
But yes, also G Gundam

Gabiluzbad
Logically we just shouldn’t fight wars at all

Gabiluzbad
It’s inefficient

Gabiluzbad
God I’m so smart why has literally no one ever suggested this before

RobotApocalypse
yeah this is literally a star trek episode lmao

RobotApocalypse
the fact that he can't get his head around "the losers would fight anyway" is such a cherry on top

There is almost no case where a simulation is going to be able to tell you this is exactly what will happen

Rama
Even given perfect information (which is impossible) it would at best give you a probability spread

Rama
If it gives you 90/10 odds, most states in a situation where they are willing to go to war anyway will take the 10% gamble, even putting aside the basic nature of human psychology of being unwilling to give up something important without a fight

BattroidBattery
even if you put aside all the psychological factors and somehow came up with a model people accepted at the time, as soon as you stopped fighting real wars you wouldn't be able to validate the model anymore so it would get increasingly less accurate and everyone would know that

Echo
Also the issue of like "well the model showed me exactly how I lose, so I'll just do a different strategy this time and win!"
