[murderbot, no spoilers, vent] I just...

if you're reading these books for the Nonstop Action Twisty Shocking Plots, then yes, you're going to be disappointed.
transilience
if you're reading them for the Mindbending Secrets of Science, then yes, you're going to be disappointed.
transilience
I don't know who pitched this series to their friends as anything other than the story of an incredibly smart, brave, weird, cranky person in a world where everything is stacked against it
transilience
but the fact that they're not the books you want them to be doesn't make them not good books
transilience
I've read bad books. I've read bad books that I really enjoyed.
transilience
These are not that.
transilience
and I wish people would stop branding them as "bad" and "overrated" and whatever the fuck else because they went in with expectations
transilience
and I know this is oversensitive of me since they're generally well received and selling like hotcakes but murderbot is so important to me you guys
transilience
and it hurts me when people brush aside its journey and its development as "boring" or "unrealistic"
transilience
OF COURSE IT'S UNREALISTIC, IT IS A SUPERPOWERED CYBORG IN SPACE
transilience
but emotionally it is one of the realest characters I have ever encountered
unoiled snake
sigh
unoiled snake
waves "it's okay to not like things" vid
transilience
I know, it's just--
transilience
we're seven books in! stop reading them if you don't like them!
unoiled snake
I mean, I'm sighing at them because they shouldn't be dicks about it xP
unoiled snake
sometimes a thing is just not for you and that's okay
transilience
right, like there are books that I thought I'd like that I bounced off of!
unoiled snake
same!
transilience
and it's not because there's anything WRONG with them, they just didn't do the specific things that make me happy
unoiled snake
yeah
unoiled snake
sometimes it just doesn't grab you
transilience
there are also books I didn't like because they straight-up sucked, but that's a whole different feel
transilience
and I didn't even start Murderbot for ages after I first heard of it because from the outside it sounded like it might be one of those!
transilience
mutters into hoodie I just have a lot of feelings

Spazztichero
There is a persistent fallacious logic that if something is popular, it must be bad. But also, some people just enjoy hating things publicly. By setting themselves opposite of a popular sentiment, they are somehow reaffirming their own uniqueness.
Spazztichero
Murderbot is clearly a character driven piece of literature.
Spazztichero
There is action, and a good amount of it! But it's a lot more about how Murderbot thinks about and reacts to what's going on around it than it is about the action itself.
Spazztichero
By its very nature of not being human, Murderbot is neuro-atypical, and that is really interesting to read.
transilience
EXACTLY
transilience
it's a feature not a bug!
transilience
(System Collapse is SO GOOD, Nick, I am looking forward to having people to scream with)
Spazztichero
I need to read the new one!
Spazztichero
I'm in the middle of another book right now so it'll be a bit. But I'm looking forward to it.
transilience
Internet comments that don't make me mad suggest that you may wanna reread Network Effect first, since it follows directly!
unoiled snake
yeah, that one makes sense
