the full hippo story: i was on a small motor boat with six other people (six tourists total including me, and one local driver/guide), and we stopped to observe some hippos on the other side of the channel; i'm terrible at judging distances but they weren't that close

then suddenly, all four of them went underwater at the same time

5-10 seeconds later, one of them resurfaced, about 15-20 feet closer, directly pointed at us

it was the first time i was freaked because it was the first time i've seen a guide look freaked, lmao; we bolted in the boat

okay very funny story that i forgot to tell:

my aunt was sitting on a padded bench outside our tent, reading and drinking coffee, when she felt something small jump up onto the cushion next to her

it didn't touch her, but she says it dipped the cushion a little in the exact same way her cat does when he jumps up onto the couch next to her, and she says that if she hadn't had both hands occupied she would have unthinkingly reached over and scooped it into her lap out of pure muscle memory

banded mongoose and vervet monkeys were the pigeons of the campgrounds we stayed in, btw; you are 10000000% not supposed to feed or interact with them in any way, but sometimes people do anyway and the result is that they will approach for food

once we rolled up to a stretch point and there were vervet monkeys hanging around, and the guide told us to zip any food and small valuables into our bags, and that if we wanted to leave any bags in the jeep we should turn the zippers inward (pressed against a seat or something) so they weren't easily accessible, and then buckle the seatbelt around the bag's

my aunt asked what would have happened if she had indeed unthinkingly picked up the moongoose, and she was told that it would have freaked out and bitten her and she would have been airlifted to gabarone for a rabies vaccine

they would come bother us at meals sometimes, too; once one stretched up onto its hind legs and put its front paws on the edge a guy's seat, then very quietly and politely waited for falling food

and i never personally witnessed monkeys come into the campgrounds but another woman said they'd play on the canvas roof of her tent in the mornings at one place and they were very noisy
