from what I can tell observing from afar, damned if you do damned if you don't

those of us who've been through the webring/geocities era and have fewer shits to give war against the kids who just discovered fandom last week and no one agrees on anything

IMO it's totally fine as long as you're not holding future fic hostage contingent on getting a certain amount of comments/kudos. which I know you wouldn't do, obviously!

something like 'I'd love to hear what you think!' or 'comments appreciated!' is inviting without being pushy

I see plenty of people asking for comments, one person I can think of says something along the lines of 'please leave a comment telling me what you think, or even just the word toaster'

...naturally their comment section is full of people saying toaster, but a. It proves they read the fic, and b. It does work well as an ice breaker, I have seen so many people who don't know what to say or are really shy about commenting

mm, and some people have trouble with an expectation to leave long comments, so I even saw one author saying that they welcome emoji comments

Meanwhile another author I follow has so many emojis comments she is asking people to say nothing if they just leave emojis... But this is a big name author I am talking about, at least relatively so. She gets loads and heaps of the things so she can afford to be choosy

But yeah emoji comments are valid in my book
