Abuse and neglect are equally terrible, but I'm about to review the chapter on sexual abuse by caregivers and ahh. AHHH. It's a reminder that horrible people do exist and they do horrible things.

The material doesn't shy away from discussing the horrors of institutionalization. It acknowledges how we discarded basic human rights the second maintaining them for folks with disabilities became inconvenient to us.

The material was surprisingly negative towards the police. When they absolutely must be called, it is for the purpose of reporting a crime, not intervention. The material underlined the important of requesting an officer experienced with working with people with disabilities and advocating for the person you're supporting.

Not quite ACAB, but definitely aware that police have killed and will continue to kill vulnerable people. 🙃

The trainer kindly reminded us that tomorrow will include active shooter training at both the facilities we'll be working in. You, uh. You definitely gotta be responsible for a lot of things in that situation.

But after that, it'll be shadowing for the day, and I'm excited to see folks I already know from both staff and the participant pool.

i would tell you to have fun, but active shooting trainings are 100000% never fun

Both centers have double-locked entrances on all sides. Someone with a gun is going to have to be buzzed in twice. This goes a long way in soothing my own NOT UNREASONABLE personal fears.
