Hazard Kitten
[BG3 Act 3 spoilers]
Hazard Kitten
Wow, I really don't fucking love how they handle Wyll's contract
Hazard Kitten
ONE: it feels like he does whatever Tav tells him, I hate every decision doesn't bring up "We could find another way to save your dad, tell the bitch to piss off"
Hazard Kitten
and of course the camp (positively or negatively) treating the 'refusing to sell his eternal soul to a devil who already shows she is a duplicitous loophole abuser' as selfish
Hazard Kitten
like SH definitely would given gestures but also if you chose - again YOU are the one who makes the decision - him to break the pact, you can shit talk him for being a selfish asshole? ????
Hazard Kitten
Jaheria is basically about the only one with a non pants on head stupid opinion
Hazard Kitten
Also every other character with this kind of big opinion have a 'let X decide'
Hazard Kitten
Wyll's not even a favorite, just - the presentation rankles
Hazard Kitten
(also I ran into a bug where Gale freaks out at me for agreeing to Raphael's deal to give the crown when I told Raph to piss off
Hazard Kitten
(playing a CG swordbard who loves telling powerful people to fuck off and encourage his comrades to do the same
Hazard Kitten
read up Wyll was majorly reworked and I feel like his arc suffered, it didn't gel as neatly
Hazard Kitten
But yeah, I think what rankles here is everyone acting like Known Duplicitous Bitch is going to keep her word without some weird wrinkle
Hazard Kitten
(like the 'no one can harm your dad except you and your party' makes me think she'll have Wyll kill his dad down the road)
moontouched
yeah i've heard wyll gets pretty shafted unfortunately
moontouched
i genuinely hope they fix that
Hazard Kitten
Yeah same, it's weird Karlach of all people disapproves when if she's in the party during the deal, she hisses at Mizora to leave Wyll alone
Hazard Kitten
but yeah, AGAIN it's weird everyone's dialogue assumes A: Wyll's dad is just gonna be dead if he refuses, and B: Mizora is being honest when she shown... she's not
Hazard Kitten
she's a devil of her word, but she knows how to twist her words like a snake
Hazard Kitten
yeah, Wyll in Act 1 seems to have a whole thing about wanting to be Seen as a hero, thus the insistence of the Blades of the Frontier and his upset at his altered appearance, and that hint of ego/need for praise/acceptance just disappears for the rest of the game,
Hazard Kitten
(from my understanding, this was a much stronger part of his EA characterization but also lead him to doing things like torturing goblins...)
Hazard Kitten
But yeah, it felt like they got rid of the bits nobody liked and couldn't figure out what to put it in (I feel like he has the threads for an arc of having self-worth as the 'Boasting wanna be seen as a hero' and his willingness to throw his soul away for others suggests a rock-bottom sense of self-worth
Hazard Kitten
but yeah, with Mizora's contract unlike almost every binary choice, there's no pointing out the 'Nah, I'll do something else'
moontouched
yeah like i don't mind that he's not uh. Committing Geneva Convention Violations now
moontouched
but you gotta put something in there to replace it man
moontouched
honestly him being the Only Deeply Earnest One In A Very Worrying Way in a party of chucklefucks would work if they leaned into it more
Hayley
I WILL say that there is a take a third option option but like. Not through the dialogue, which sucks as that's the important thing here
Hazard Kitten
Yeah, that's the sucky part is I'm sure you can rescue the duke without her, but it Should be treated as a possibility in either the actual pact dialogue or when you chat with the party after
Hazard Kitten
talking to Wyll after and trying to point out they don't need Mizora, and he just dismisses it flat out. I'd like at least a persuasion / insight something check for him not to give up
Hazard Kitten
because it would make sense for Wyll to hate himself - but you should have a 'kick in the pants, it ain't over yet' follow up
Hazard Kitten
OKAY I thought about how to fix Wyll to make him more interesting: as I said, his Act 1 bluster of being Blades of the Frontier, hero to those outside Baldur's gate, and his willingness to throw his soul away, and his adoration for his father, and lean into those along with his goodness
Hazard Kitten
-Wyll is a good kid, but as the son of a very influential, powerful and well-respected man, he always felt he is measured and found wanting by everyone (justified or not), maybe even taking from his EA that he was put into the Fists and was not ready for it - not ending as drastically (more humiliated and accused of relying on dad)
Hazard Kitten
-So he was already on shaky ground when the Cult of the Dragon happen, wanting to prove and please his dad by saving Baldur's Gate from Tiamat, so when his dad sees him with Mizora and tells them to get out, his self-worth craters. So he becomes this folk hero to try to get approval from anyone, and until he runs into Karlach (either killing or getting
Hazard Kitten
talked down), he was actually fine with the devil hunting because it's just bad monsters, but part of him secretly craved the 'good jobs' and condescending pet-like treatment because it meant someone approves of him!!!
Hazard Kitten
Gale self-sacrifices because he thinks he is a massive fuck up and on limited time, Wyll just doesn't think he's worth anything so if he could help someone, that means he did something good.
Hazard Kitten
His arc can get him to learn to value himself as a person and not needing to constantly seek out other people's approval for self-worth
Hazard Kitten
Or selfish/evil Tavs will take advantage of this need to please (even a full on corruption arc)
Hazard Kitten
I think this also makes him a stronger foil to Karlach as she got fucked over by a guy she wanted to please/felt good about, and while Astarion's sire was all about incredible fucked up monstrous abuse, Shadowheart gaslighting, and Lae'zel being indoctrinated into a cultural cult of Vlaakith, Wyll's "master" (Mizora) is emotionally abuse
