GalacticBattler
A movie plot that has lived in my head rent free for years
GalacticBattler
After 2001, Terminator, Portal, The Matrix, and probably a dozen other stories about robot uprisings
GalacticBattler
I think as a society we’ve kind of been conditioned to find it unnerving when a machine starts thinking for itself
GalacticBattler
And I think a movie about a robot trying to escape a bunch of crazed Terminator fans could be good
Rama
GalacticBattler
A lab somewhere is working on AI research and they actually pull it off
GalacticBattler
And then a bunch of government suits show up to shut the project down because it’s “too dangerous”
GalacticBattler
“It’s only a matter of time before the robots turns on us.”
“What are you basing that prediction on?”
GalacticBattler
“...I don’t have to explain myself to you! Give us the robot before it goes all Skynet on us!”
GalacticBattler
Rama : HAL did several things wrong but like
GalacticBattler
Because he was scared and confused
GalacticBattler
Not because computers inevitably turn on their creators
GalacticBattler
Maybe the robot in my movie DID do something wrong
GalacticBattler
But like
GalacticBattler
Out of innocence and confusion, and part of their character arc is learning to understand why what they did was wrong
LOVE & PEATH
what struck me about 2001 when I watched it, unaccountably for the first time, recently
LOVE & PEATH
was indeed Hashtag HAL 9000 Did Nothing Wrong
LOVE & PEATH
imagine making a single math error and your coworkers start talking about having you formally executed
LOVE & PEATH
literally self-defense
moontouched
yeah literally HAL 9000 Did Nothing Wrong
moontouched
its part of the reason that dave basically resets him at the end so he can die without having to be horribly mentally burdened because his horrible mental spiral is quite literally caused by conflicting orders given to him by other people
Lightning Bolt
yeah I can see the robot doing something wrong but in the same way children will play too rough because they don't understand yet
Lightning Bolt
you have to educate, not execute
GalacticBattler
Honestly
GalacticBattler
“I killed someone before I understood what death was and now I work to save others to make up for my mistake.” Would be a pretty solid motivation for like
GalacticBattler
A robot superhero
Echo
Ooh, yeah, that'd be a good one.
Echo
Because the AI would basically be coming into the world as an innocent child who had the capacity for incredible strength way before gaining the knowledge of when it is and isn't safe for people to use that, so.
A Grinning DM
Kind of sounds like a modern reimagining of Frankenstein
A Grinning DM
You built this sapient creature and now you fear it
A Grinning DM
Would like to see that
A Grinning DM
Also Star Trek Lower Decks did a low key recurring joke in one of their episodes with a sentient super computer that ran an entire world where the first reaction of every Starfleet officer informed about it was “so it’s secretly evil, right?” and the computer is actually genuinely just the nicest
Rama
A Grinning DM : tbh I think most AI stories are retellings of Frankenstein that missed the point that Victor is just the McFucking Worst
A Grinning DM
Rama : indeed
GalacticBattler
I guess this is the plot of Frankenstein
Rama
I mean the plot of Frankenstein is "Victor is the Fucking Worst and also Switzerland is really pretty"
