In 2020 rare protests were held across the region after Mongolian-language schools were ordered to use Mandarin to teach some subjects. Mongols feared this was a step towards their culture being swallowed up by that of the Han, an ethnic group which makes up over 90% of China’s population (and almost all of the country’s leadership).
