Basically Rue and Mint are two protags. Rue can turn into some of the monsters you fight and Mint can use a variety of magic. I actually think of it as a dry run for some of the stuff they'd implement in Kingdom Hearts years later as far as the magic and Rue having a weird weapon anyway.
