it works but needs a better singer (just like better people replaced Leonard Cohen himself on most of his tracks).

Well, better people did covers of his tracks and he felt that to be true at least in several cases. But they didn't replace him on "his tracks." Yes, it probably would be better with a better singer...

listened to a lot of his originals and covers several years ago for a tribute evening when he died and, while some of the alternative singers were also bad, most were better than him. His talent was clearly on the songwriting side. Just like the mathematician is probably best as a mathematician.

He really is very good at the maths...
