Just watched a reel about how the biggest compliment that Asians give to desserts is “It’s not too sweet”.

Honestly, I never understood it.
Like I would comment if a dessert is bland AF but when is a dessert “too sweet”? And why is it bad? Like, taste-wise?

Curious.

it's about balance on the palate. We don't like our sweets to be overpowering or sickly sweet kasi.

Anything that's too anything isn't good tbh. (Unless you're challenging yourself with extra spice and extra sourness for the hell of it, then ok!! But normal food?)

As mentioned in the reply above, it's all about balance.
Jewel
But then again, we don't all experience or like our food the same. Baka nga "too sweet" for me is good naman pala for you. Eh di okay. More for you Haha

Jewel : Yun nga eh. I’m trying to remember what that threshold is for me kasi ako din yung umuubos. (LOL)
Jewel
NKY ✅ : I personally have experienced food that was too sweet. I like sweets, pero sa sobrang sweet hindi na siya masaya! Bigay ko na lang sayo next time, if maulit ulit ha? (haha)
NKY ✅
Jewel : Game! I wanna see what my threshold is.
aaangsss✨
I feel like it's because the western idea of dessert is more prominent, and many western desserts are hella sweet (but also i'm saying this with only my experience to back it up, and i'm sure that's lacking).
Jewel
NKY ✅ : I saw someone mention Krispy Kreme!! So kinda that for me. I can take like, half a donut. One is too much for me. Bilis ko maumay. Haha. I also do not like Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, but idk if that's because it's too sweet or di ko lang trip yung flavor(s).
Pusa-Cat!
oh boy if y'all think Reese's Peanut Butter Cups and Krispy Kreme Original Donuts are too sweet, may mas tatamis pa diyan dito sa US! They really love overloading the sugar here which is why diabetes is huge.
Jewel
Pusa-Cat! : I feel like the "too sweet" thing is also a cultural thing! A lot of the super sweet products I've encountered were American nga, now that I think about it.

Tapos mga Japanese desserts and the more traditional Filipino desserts aren't super sweet, if at all.
Pusa-Cat!
it's related to the PH sugar trade industry collapse in the 1970s, kasi that was the time the US really began upping the demand for cane sugar. Di sila nagsawa. I personally don't like it so much. I go to the next city to visit an Asian baker for my dessert fix kasi maski dark chocolates rito super tamis pa rin.

as a lover of sweets, gusto ko kasi kumain ng madami and may umay factor if it's too sweet. also true na too sweet a lot of us dessert like Krispy kreme.

trip ko rin yung may added salty or sour. if too sweet, tamis lng malalasahan ko.

Oh wow. The KK glazed donuts? Siyet, I can finish a whole 6-pack box by myself. :-|

NKY ✅ : for me, it needs to be super new to enjoy it. hahaha as a Dunkin Choco butternut loyalist.

KK is also a no for me. J.Co mas sakto yung tamis
Jewel
I've heard Tim Horton's is also super sweet! Like, it's too sweet for a bunch of people I know. Di ko pa natatry though pero nacurious ako!
tambolera22
Jewel : same. I have friends who are Tim's fanatics but the few times I've tried di ko talaga trip.
Jewel
I wonder if age and/or experience is a factor too. Dati kasi pinapapapak ko yung Tang. Lalamon ako ng chocolate, candy. MAJOR sweet tooth. But the older I got, the less I felt drawn to sugar and was more after a balance of flavors. ARTE HAHAHHA

I wonder how much of that is physiology like tastebuds changing? or if it's just preferences changing over time
Jewel
tambolera22 : Assignment ko na 'to sa sarili ko. To try Tim Horton's. I hope that at least their coffee is good???
tambolera22
Jewel : yes, age.
I didn't bother to find out more.
Jewel
tambolera22 : Naaalala ko pa up until my 20s I'd buy a ton of candy from Candy Corner tapos deliks na sakin yun. Nauubos in one sitting. Or two if I got distracted.

I do still like candy on occasion (gummi candiesssss. yum.) pero hindi na kaya ng major binge. Literal sumasakit ulo ko if I eat too much of that processed sugar. (haha)
tambolera22
Jewel : omg same hahahaha Candy Corner what a throwback
forgotmyog
Jewel : sour candies! favorite until now. and chocnut. and tablea hahahha, yung gritty p.
