Quinneapolis
an idea Gabiluzbad had the other day that I'm obsessed with: a sports anime that crosses over with a simultaneously-occurring magical girl anime for one episode
Quinneapolis
the lads are playing soccer and shooting for the goal
Quinneapolis
then in one episode, a mysterious stranger transforms the protag into a giant goofy monster
Quinneapolis
and three to five girls who had previously only appeared in crowd shots show up and transform into magical girls
Quinneapolis
fight and defeat it, purifying the monster and restoring him back to human form
Quinneapolis
then the sports drama just continues next episode like nothing happened
Quinneapolis
never comes up again. they erased his memory to keep their battle a secret
Lightning Bolt
is there also a simultaneous episode where the magical girls go to a soccer game
Quinneapolis
I kind of like the idea of the magical girl anime side never being made
Quinneapolis
you just see the one fight
Gabiluzbad
There's like 4 episodes where the magical girls go to sports games in Go Princess Precure
skerple
I think it's even funnier if the memories aren't wiped but none of the sports cast ever bring it up again anyway
Quinneapolis
also strong
skerple
just like "damn, that was some shit huh? anyway"
Quinneapolis
that was crazy but we gotta focus for the big tournament
Lightning Bolt
"was that guy hired by our rivals? no? okay then we don't need to investigate more"
skerple
occasionally you'll see a magical girl fight in the extreme background of a long establishing shot, or some random background characters will be having some barely-intelligible chatter about the magical girls as the protagonists walk by
Frozen Time
Every once in a while somebody's late for practice because there was another monster attack that held them up
Frozen Time
it's fine, it happens, this is normal
skerple
but it's never the focus again and the viewer might miss it entirely if they aren't paying attention to the background shit
pixie lovemail
no i think the gag is stronger if the magical girl stuff is just for one episode
pixie lovemail
and the girls still show up in crowd shots after but that's it
Quinneapolis
yeah let's not overdo it
Quinneapolis
they get ONE episode
skerple
yeah ok
Quinneapolis
for the rest of the show, magic isn't real
ShootingXC
yeah I think that's best
Quinneapolis
just soccer
skerple
maybe once in a while an animator sneaks in a background gag where the girls have to quickly exit a crowd shot but I'll leave it there
pixie lovemail
i think it is enhanced, however, if the guy transformed into a monster was having a Serious Emotional Arc leading to a crisis, but after the episode he kinda mellows out but the situation in which he resolved his stuff isn't actually referred to
pixie lovemail
but it was definitely the magical girl episode
skerple
absolutely
Quinneapolis
he was like thinking of giving up on his dream
Quinneapolis
then the villain exploited that doubt to monsterize him
Quinneapolis
but then it was purified and he's back all in on soccer
skerple
and it's got to be a secondary character, I think
Quinneapolis
yeah I think that's funnier
skerple
because the arc can't be anything so important to the central emotional arcs of the protagonists that it would warrant emotional flashbacks later on
skerple
maybe it's part of a larger arc where all the sports boys are kinda Goin Through It on various levels but with the power of friendship and teamwork and burning shounen spirit they all get through it together, for Friendship and Sports
skerple
except that one dude.
Gabiluzbad
Later the writers are like
Gabiluzbad
"We wrote him into a corner and couldn't figure out how to resolve his emotional arc"
skerple
no I think it's funnier if it's 100% what they planned all along
Quinneapolis
someone asks me what was up with the magical girl episode and I say
Quinneapolis
"what magical girl episode"
Gabiluzbad
While this is a funny idea
Gabiluzbad
I DO like the idea of like
Gabiluzbad
crossovers between animes of different genres
Gabiluzbad
Have a big project about a class of high school kids where there's a separate anime about every student and they're all different kinds of shows
Gabiluzbad
And all the stories are happening concurrently
⏏️ndrusi
many years ago on a forum, I can't remember the context for this, but someone proposed an anime about a family where each of them is secretly the protagonist of an anime they would be the target audience for
Gabiluzbad
oh nice
⏏️ndrusi
I can't remember what that meant for the parents, but they had a son and a daughter who were both just barely concealing secret identities from their parents and each other
dragon time
I've been wanting this so bad for years
dragon time
Just a little shared universe, as a treat
