I think Trigun Stampede is a very different show from Trigun, and one that I like less (not one that is worse)
Quinneapolis
not for the CG or the redesigns or anything it's just
Quinneapolis
so fucking bleak
Quinneapolis
Vash barely ever gets to be zany with how every place they go is a dead city populated by human tragedy he's powerless to prevent
skerple
yeah, the thing is, like... that bleakness was there in the OG anime but it wasn't such an overpowering flavor because
1. more places they went were, like, alive, and populated
2. the large amounts of funny filler
EsperBot
Yeah I'm going to be real it's really not sparking joy
skerple
like I still LIKE it, I think it's real neat to look at and the characters ARE very much themselves, I just would also like some fucking jokes and low-stakes goofs once in a while
RobotApocalypse
no spoilers but based on where s1 ended my guess is we're gonna get more of that hopefulness and goofiness in s2
Quinneapolis
it really needed those early arcs filled with zany antics where Vash gets to succeed peacefully
pixie lovemail
yeah i fell off it for the same reason
Quinneapolis
before just thrusting him into the emotional blender
pixie lovemail
like, frontloading all of the tragedy including the backstory stuff makes it really hard to find footing with vash as a character
pixie lovemail
because if he only gets to be zany for like, two episodes, you don't get a sense of how important that is to him, and there isn't a status quo to break to really add impact to the oof later on
EsperBot
I'm doing my best to judge it on its own merits and not compare it with the original but, like,
Quinneapolis
I'll stick with it but like, man
EsperBot
it's a very different show, and it's one that if it didn't have the Trigun name attached to it I don't think I'd want to watch
Quinneapolis
I'm glad we have precure slotted right after it
EsperBot
so the comparson is hard to avoid
Gabiluzbad
I will say there's at least one episode where he just fuckin' succeeds
Gabiluzbad
in how far I watched it on my own
Gabiluzbad
I'm sorry you guys aren't wild about it though :<
skerple
I think the first episode actually nailed the tonal balance perfectly and I wish more of the subsequent episodes did
Gabiluzbad
even the bit where Vash was able to sort of rekindle hope with the Nebraskas
Gabiluzbad
was good
Gabiluzbad
but then they took a WILD swerve into bomb guy land
RobotApocalypse
how far is anime club into it right now?
Quinneapolis
5
Quinneapolis
the one with the child who gets abducted and turned into a killing machine and then dies in front of Vash after having his life ruined
RobotApocalypse
okay
oh i'm scary
as someone who didn't watch the original Trigun
oh i'm scary
I like it
oh i'm scary
I'll chill with the fucked up body horror angst show
big juicy
hard agree
big juicy
i haven't watched the og trigun anime since i first saw it in like. 2008 maybe? but i distinctly remember the vibes and prefer them. i really think the goofy antics are so important to like. yeah, make it feel not as out-and-out bleak, and also make it hit harder when shit does get rough
big juicy
trigun stampede feels like it really is like a 24-episode anime crammed into 12 that has to excise all the more relaxed and lighthearted moments to make sure all the plot fits in
big juicy
i still had a good time watching it but it just doesn't really match the trigun i remember, it's really its own separate beast
skerple
vash has not eaten even a single donut so far
