What video game mechanic has a good "feel" to you? Got to thinking of this because of the space blob mechanic in Celeste
duck bastard
like, since it's a video game, you can't really "feel" things physically - we're not at that level of technology yet lmao
duck bastard
But when dashing through the space blobs in Celeste, there's still a really satisfying "glub blub blub" feeling thanks to the visuals and sound effect which accompany it
duck bastard
I think you hear this a lot about shotguns in any games with gun gameplay, whether FPS or survival horror - it's important for a lot of players that the shotgun has a good "feel" to it
MR SEPHIROTH
I appreciate the Portal sound effects from the portal gun
MR SEPHIROTH
Horizon Zero Dawn also does a neat bow string sound effect that's helpful for knowing when it's at full draw

Swimming through ink in Splatoon games hits this for me, but also when you get hit by a slime in Stardew Valley and get the debuff! But good in the sense of effectively frustrating... Without really showing goo on the player, the way the debuff is portrayed is very goopy and sticky to me
MR SEPHIROTH
and for whatever reason the door opening/closing sounds in Ico have always stuck with me... which I wouldn't exactly call satisfying but definitely effective. something about the slight delay and the rusty, metallic clank of it.
MR SEPHIROTH
it could just mean "the door has closed, as designed" or it could mean "the shadows have come for yorda, who was keeping the door open"
Corpse Sniffer
it probably ssounds dumb since its not a mechanic but how the menus work in persona 5
Corpse Sniffer
or like the effects for switching between windows
Corpse Sniffer
also ALL OUT ATTACK splash screen
MR SEPHIROTH
oh!! and katamari. the little bloop sounds when you roll things up are so satisfying
Corpse Sniffer
omg yes katamari in general

Void Bastards has excellent game feel on most every aspect of gameplay, from the weapons to picking up loot
Calliente
(Though beware, emetophobes, there's a hazard in the game that makes you nauseous - it's basically a status effect that makes aiming harder - but it has an audio cue of retching/vomiting noises)
Calliente
The audio design on Void Bastards is really good, but arguably TOO good in some ways
Gayple
the ink sounds in splatoon

I also loved the feel of the tech in Alien: Isolation
Calliente
Something about the chunky levers and handles and the visual and audio weight to using them felt so good
Calliente
Like...when I am excited to pull a lever not just because it unlocks progression, but because I like the feel behind the animation of pulling the lever, you're doing something very right
Calliente
Also, James, not that I'm laying this out here as catnip for you or anything
Calliente
But FFXV has a cooking mechanic and the meals look delicious
duck bastard
CALLIE I'M MAKING PROGRESS AND I KNOW ABOUT THE COOKING MECHANIC!!!

I doubt it count as a mechanic and more is just environmental, but driving or riding a wagon in Red Dead Redemption 2. There's just something... tactile about trundling down the road surfaces, wheels creaking, wood popping, harnesses jingling

i'm eating right now but that video is still making me hungry

It sounds GOOD. It feels GOOD. And it has a timing mechanic to help add to that feeling of skill mastery.
