Preferences: not centered around a romance, not a part of a series, and I love intrigue, horror, unnerving things. I like when stories are scary enough to make my skin crawl.
Murderbot Diaries IS a series but it's a series of short stories and novellas (and one novel) and the main character is Asexual Agenda Aromatic Arguable Autistic and Absolutely Anxious. And also a Murderbot.
"A SecUnit hacks its government module giving itself free will, thinks really hard about going on a murder spree but instead decides to pirate ten thousand hours of TV to watch while people think its charging its batteries. It does its best not to care about people but sometimes it does anyway and EVEN WORSE sometimes people care about IT"

I'm not a huge reader but my fiance is and he gave the following recommendations: T. Kingfisher - The Twisted Ones or The Hollow Places Cathrynne R Valente - Palimpsest Stephen Graham Jones - The Only Good Indians
CRK also has a lot of other good stuff in science fiction, gothnoir, dark urban fantasy, etc and frequently writes lgbt characters. lots and lots of short stories of varying genres. you might like to check out some of those, especially Bradbury Weather and Onion.
