Cid is not great because of how cool he is and all his plans work out, Cid is great because he's a dumbass whose plans only work because his subordinates misunderstand them for being something smarter than they actually were. He's great because he has one braincell and it only ever asks "how cool would x be??"

his grand scheme in the third novel only "works out" from his subordinates' pov because they wrongly assume he's trying to help them

from his pov, everything fell apart and he's coasting by on his subordinates' good graces by stubbornly pretending not to notice anything went wrong

the complete disconnect in communication is what makes the story funny!
