[tabletop] [wrassling] so due to watching a bunch of retrospectives on 90s wrestling the last two days, my brain decided that "let's work on a one on one entertainment wrestling tabletop system" as a bed time thought experiment
pumpkindrink
one player and a dm, focusing on navigating both locker room politics and putting on good shows, the "combat" being more a series of skill checks alongside the "opponent" to work the crowd and reach the pre planned outcome
pumpkindrink
the goal being "become a maincard talent"
pumpkindrink
the sheet would be six stats that will seem very familiar to d&d folks
Infychu
Consider: every class is just a different flavor of bard, (heel, hero, gimmicky AF trope, etc.) and the combat rules are all for SOCIAL combat, because that's where the real conflict comes from
pumpkindrink
being Athletics, Skill, Toughness, Cunning, Intuition and Charisma
pumpkindrink
you start at rank 1 in each skill with some points to spend upping them at creation. each rank is a die (either a d6 or d10, not sure which yet) you can roll in checks
pumpkindrink
there are two types of checks: contested and cooperative
pumpkindrink
the first is just your dice roll v your opponent. ironically this will almost never be on the mat and instead be all backroom stuff
pumpkindrink
the second is mat stuff where you and your opponent try to reach a number goal in a certain number of turns to decide how the match appeals to the crowd
pumpkindrink
Infychu : yeah exactly its performance on the mat but the politics are BRUTAL
pumpkindrink
your actions can give you or you opponents bonuses on rolls, for example using your cunning to put the other guy "over" so he gets bonuses on charisma checks while kicking your ass
pumpkindrink
being a jobber isn't glorious but it can earn you allies later if you help a guy get some popularity
pumpkindrink
now tbf irl unless your fucking hulk hogan you're not gonna usually have that much creative control but this is a bit more fun for rp than just doing jobs youre assigned
pumpkindrink
coming back to this, honestly the cooperative roll goal here I feel you could adapt to a lot of settings and scenarios in rp where you want more crunch than just coop story telling but not to fight to bend an existing system to work for it
pumpkindrink
it's pretty similar to a system PikaBot used in Valor Trigger for objective defense maps
