so the movie is drowning in film grain throughout, which is artificial - on the movie's tiny budget they couldn't afford that kind of film so they shot digitally and added the grain in post

but one of the functions of the film grain is to introduce uncertainty to especially dark shots

of, "wait, did I see someone in the dark"

without it ever being clear

and the director, while talking about the film, was like

"oh no yeah some of those shots actually do have people standing in the dark that you can't quite see"

"I'm not gonna say which ones though"
