[ff16][it looks cool but this is a negativity plurk]
Quinneapolis
"You only control Clive, the other party members are purely AI controlled"
Quinneapolis
Quinneapolis
why do games do this now
Quinneapolis
it's not fun to be controlling 15% of a battle
Quinneapolis
YoshiP's quote where he's like
Quinneapolis
"Games have evolved to accept realtime action as the default so we're evolving Final Fantasy to keep up"
raspberrydrink
at least with like, ff12, the whole system was built around it
Quinneapolis
why, YoshiP
Quinneapolis
turn-based isn't dead
Quinneapolis
ATB isn't dead
Quinneapolis
why didn't you make an RPG
連続犬
Yeah, as much as I think FF16 looks cool (I haven't looked at the new media but I plan to after my dentist appt)
Quinneapolis
I come to FF to control a funky little group of guys
Quinneapolis
not to do air combos as a guy named clive
連続犬
I don't entirely understand why they didn't just go the FF7 Remake route if they wanted realtime action
Quinneapolis
let DMC be DMC, let FF be FF
Quinneapolis
we've known this was gonna be an action game but nothing they've shown me has sold me on the decision
Quinneapolis
these look like cool battles, just.
Quinneapolis
final fantasy
★ тяу-нαя∂уи
7r was the platonic ideal of character switching that 15 tried
★ тяу-нαя∂уи
baffling that we're not running with that
連続犬
7r is just the platonic ideal of 'action-based' rpg combat, period
★ тяу-нαя∂уи
okay FAIR
Quinneapolis
give me a group of four to ten people, exactly three of them girls, and keep me in control of three to five at once
Quinneapolis
I'm frustrated
Quinneapolis
make this an FF14 spinoff game or something and I wouldn't even complain
Quinneapolis
FF hasn't had a mainline 'pick actions for a party' game since 10
Quinneapolis
honestly I got more hostile to this style of game after playing XB3
skerple
hell, the four job fiesta exists because ff5's gameplay is still rock fucking solid all these decades later
Quinneapolis
where you have a party of six people and five of them are AI controlled
Gabiluzbad
I haven’t seen the new stuff but this does match up with my original opinion
Quinneapolis
so you just, barely influence the outcome of fights
ғᴏxʏᴍᴏʀᴏɴ
yeah, agreein with all of this
Gabiluzbad
“This looks like a cool action game but a bad final fantasy game”
Quinneapolis
because if you're fighting six enemies, you're in control of 8% of the battlefield at a time
Quinneapolis
I'm more mad than I was before watching this video because of YoshiP talking like turn based rpgs are archaic and action games are the future
Quinneapolis
you of all people should know that isn't true man
Quinneapolis
also this setup means that this is the second mainline FF in a row where you never play as a girl
Quinneapolis
item drops and exp are based on a DMC-esque rating system on boss fights and there's fuckin witch time
Quinneapolis
Clive looks so boring

oh i'm scary
if one of the big recurring public complaints about this game is that it's trying too hard not to be Final Fantasy maybe FF17 will--
Quinneapolis
bad
00000000
I saw one article describing it as "DMC meets Game of Thrones," and neither of those appeal to me at all, much less both together
Quinneapolis
that last quote bothers me the most
Quinneapolis
don't make a final fantasy game designed to appeal to people who don't like final fantasy
Quinneapolis
don't dilute the vision to appeal to mainstream gamers
Princess Emily
sigh
BattroidBattery
for better or worse FF is a Big Franchise, they're going to keep chasing a large enough audience to justify the AAA budget and flagship status
Quinneapolis
I'd prefer a cheaper, smaller scale final fantasy that was willing to not try and be everything to everyone
Quinneapolis
it's ok to not have every game be 80 hours of insanely polished gigagraphics
Quinneapolis
make it fun, make it distinctive
thetaClysm
i absolutely suck at action games and i often find it really difficult to enjoy them, so this is a very worrying direction for the series for me specifically
Princess Emily
if they wanna do big setpiece with big graphics that still doesn't necessitate action gameplay
Princess Emily
come on,
thetaClysm
unfortunately the smaller-scale final fantasy you're describing does exist, but it's called bravely default and for some reason they explicitly refused to give it the final fantasy name
Quinneapolis
I still can't really put my finger on why I didn't like bravely default
thetaClysm
there are lots of potential reasons
Quinneapolis
this is just me being mean but Clive sounds like a bit villain from ARR
⏏️ndrusi
tbh I wouldn't put it past them to have explicitly denied bravely default's final fantasy-ness solely for the title screen twist
thetaClysm
from what i recall the reasoning was similar to what yoshi-p said as referenced upthread; i.e. that they wanted to take the final fantasy brand in a more ""modern"" direction, so they didn't want bravely default to have the final fantasy name specifically because it was a more traditional rpg
