i would (and have) argued that this process applies to basically ALL business (and, hell, to politics too, if you want to get into it), but corey doctorow has explained something i've thought for a long time:
The ‘Enshittification’ of TikTok
now i have the name to call it, enshittification

Yep this is kind of an inevitable endpoint to modern capitalism eh

...especially online services

SaaS = Shit as a Service

even offline! my bank has been gradually enshittifying for years. internet provider, phone provider, drug stores, restaurants...

It's cool that Corey has given us a great term for it though eh

I think making things the shittiest they can possibly be until people stop spending money is the goal

Tillor Swift : definitely the goal of capitalism =p

(to a degree, it's maybe the goal of human nature too. but definitely capitalism)

^ definitely, re: capitalism. So true about no being able to leave Facebook. I have to use mine for work. But I know that even if all my people switched to something else, it would eventually get popular and thus awful.

American for embuggeration?

Great analysis from a very smart writer. The biggest frustration I see and experience is the user frustration. The internet is now articles on the big 5 telling us how shitty the big 5 are. Cory lays it out well, but the only solution he has for us is legislation. Which in this country is written by corporate interests.

Enshittification hit our government long before the internet, and if we rely on it to bite the hand that is feeding it we will be waiting a long time, I fear. I am watching these platforms erode existing laws without consequence, so pretty skeptical about effectiveness of new legislation.
