Gatchanko!
[vidya] It's question time! Whenever it comes to video games, do you prefer having a silent protag to shape a character or an established protag with a voice/personality/background? (thinking)
Gatchanko!
Or does it depend on the game?
Gatchanko!
This is actually a question where I was like "Well, the answer should be obvious" but I've seen opinion on both ends of the pool that make me go
Gatchanko!
"Oh it's a matter of preference actually"
annunciator
i prefer established protag!
annunciator
i personally don't do well with self-inserts
☾ Batty
For me? It depends on if there's a "dating" or "implied draw" to the main character. If it's something like pokemon I don't mind there being a silent protag that's customizable. Otherwise I tend to end up detesting the self-insert. Even if it's supposed to be the "me" character, even if I'm supposed to project I don't like it.
yana
established protag! because the details add more flavor to the story, which makes it easier to get into. but really, self-inserts are fine too as long as you give me an established background. the more fleshed out it is, the better.
yana
so it's not a matter of it being too "self-inserty" to me, I just want immersion
yana
And I can't get into it if the details are left super vague!
yana
Why am I supposed to care about a cookie cutter character or blank slate!!
yana
oh I misunderstood... I was thinking about characters you could name and shape with choices but they have a background already, lmfao.
yana
but yeah established protags for me
Gatchanko!
OH yeah... That's what I was leaning more toward for silent protags with them having a background and dialogue choices, but I guess it's a broad statement (thinking)
Gatchanko!
But interesting... I saw a game where people were complaining about the established protag freaking out about having magical powers and responds were like "wow this is cringe" and "I wouldn't react like that!" or "They should've been silent!!"
Gatchanko!
so it made me go "huh people genuinely want to self-insert into a game??"
☾ Batty
Well, of course they do. They wouldn't be so prevalent if it wasn't popular. I mean just look at how many people want to play those kind of protags in RP. But I find that the other characters in such games sometimes become weird or warped to make that kind of thing fit or please the player because they know they're catering to That Type of Crowd
☾ Batty
So in a sense the story telling can get a little weird or even lacking in potency ime
Kia
I prefer established for sure
Bolt Vanderhuge
I legitimately like both options. There's sometimes merit in keeping your protagonist silent, I feel like.
Bolt Vanderhuge
They can still be characterized and established through things in the world and how other people interact with them.
Bolt Vanderhuge
Because there's a difference between "having a character" and having dialogue.
☾ Batty
Yeah. I feel like Persona5 did good with it, but FE3H fumbled. I don't like the choices Genshin made, but I wouldn't have Link from LoZ any other way.
Odd-Eyes
I gotta go with established protag. There are some cases where a silent protag will still be characterized (see botw link as an example of this) but ultimately I just dont like self-inserts most of the time
Bolt Vanderhuge
Byleth is kind of a weird case where I very much like the character as a concept, and appreciate that they're silent, over say... y'know, Corrin from Fates. But Three Houses needed to do better having characters react more properly to this weird, unnaturally stoic, quiet person and better illustrate Byleth's own growth over time.
Bolt Vanderhuge
Byleth's concept is fuckin' solid, but the execution needed some work on that one. Joker from P5 is a much better example of this thing done reasonably well.
Odd-Eyes
Byleth is... a special case for me. I think it's neat that there's a canon thing where they're clearly emotionally stunted, but as said above, the execution was less than stellar
Bolt Vanderhuge
And there are times I just like a silent protagonist more because it does tend to require a little more literary analysis to get to the heart of who they are.

Unless it's Doomguy, where the answer is kill more demons
☾ Batty
Yeah, but that's my point. Is that it's all too easy to fall in that pit of failing in execution. It's much rarer, in my experience, to nail the landing with that kind of set up.
Bolt Vanderhuge
But nothing for me is a death knell for a narrative than a protagonist that I find insufferable, even if insufferability is supposed to be part of the point
☾ Batty
LMFAO RIP Luke Tales of the Abyss
Bolt Vanderhuge
You knew exactly who I was thinking of
Bolt Vanderhuge
XDD
Odd-Eyes
I think I really do just enjoy games more when the protagonist is someone I can get attached to as a character
Odd-Eyes
which on the topic of tales is one of the reasons I enjoyed symphonia
Odd-Eyes
"Odd you play tales?" I have played one tales
𝑅𝒶𝒾𝓃𝒾𝒹𝑒𝑒𝓇 🦌
it's definitely a "both, but it depends on how the game is structured." is it a single player jrpg? i like having a protag with an established personality/background and isn't mostly a blank slate. is it like Dragon Age or an mmo? i like malleable protags.
Bolt Vanderhuge
Though I suppose for my money, I find a bad silent protagonist less offensive than a bad "established" protagonist. They each do things the other can't do, narratively, but I'd rather my protagonist keep their mouth shut and let me do the narrative analysis if the alternative is an established character I manage to find irritating.
Bolt Vanderhuge
But if you get a good established character with good dialogue, that's aces too.
Gatchanko!
ODD PLAY MORE TALES
Odd-Eyes
yeah thats fair
Odd-Eyes
NO IM PROCRASTINATING
Gatchanko!
The protags from there always have personality or are worth talking about
Odd-Eyes
/flops around like a fish
Odd-Eyes
also because I do need to wait for the right moment for me to allow myself to fall into the inevitable timesink
☾ Batty
Meanwhile I'm the opposite. I'll tolerate a couple chapters of cringe if you give me a solid development and storyline. Especially if your supporting cast makes up for the irritation or mitigates it in some way. I'd take 3 Lukes over 1 Byleth. That's just how much I hate seeing other characters twist into pretzels for a silent protag
Gatchanko!
Like Luke from Abyss is def. that example where he's a very polarizing protag but he's popular enough that people are still talking about him... He def. made a big impact where he's usually in the Top 10 for popularity polls
☾ Batty
Yeah he's iconic, for better or worse
Odd-Eyes
on the topic of fire emblem I think they handle Alear pretty well in regards to having an established protag... sure the plot is cheesy but yknow what its fine
Odd-Eyes
the characters make up for it and what the fuck I dont mind a lil cheese
Gatchanko!
Zelda cdi cutscenes but just the memes
For Link's case... He did get a voice once and well...
Gatchanko!
G O L L Y
Odd-Eyes
Link is allowed to stay silent
Odd-Eyes
He's fine like this
Gatchanko!
I still need to FE Engage... I'll get to it eventually
Gatchanko!
For gacha games tho'... That's unfortunately by design but there are some exceptions if you look very hard
☾ Batty
Me, beating Mihoyo with a stick because they literally have a gacha game with an established protag and yet /gestures at Genshin
Odd-Eyes
FGO started with a self-insert protag and though they say otherwise they've
Odd-Eyes
clearly decided to go the opposite direction with that
Gatchanko!
Ritsuka is an interesting case because FGO's writing has matured in a direction where Ritsuka has gone from normal person to an actual T-M protag
Odd-Eyes
YEAH BASICALLY
Gatchanko!
Like Nasu had even written a side story where Ritsuka met a war veteran that shaped his/hers way of life which fits the whole T-M protag trope where they met someone that changed their worldview
Odd-Eyes
ritsuka is a special case where they evolved with the writing from Self-Insert to Established Protag and honestly its neat to see
☾ Batty
One the other hand they also do the thing where they change some of the myths of the characters to better make them pure waifu for the players. Like... nuking previous husbands or lovers.
Gatchanko!
For Shirou, it was Kiritsugu. For Shiki, it was Aoko. For Ryougi, it was Mikiya
☾ Batty
Though I will appreciate what they've done with Ritsuka, there's no argument there
Gatchanko!
YEAH... That's def. a minus for FGO regarding some of the Servants
Odd-Eyes
what sucks though is that when they DO keep established husbands/lovers and such you'll get neckbeards and shit who'll complain about that—see: tomoe gozen
☾ Batty
FGO is like a menagerie of doing great things but also being the most cringe on the block as far as fanservice
☾ Batty
It's a pendulum that insists on swinging severely both ways
Gatchanko!
FGO will always be the case of "Does 1 Cool Thing but gives birth to 3 Bad Things at the same time"
Gatchanko!
IT'S SO COOL... BUT IT'S SO GODDAMN DUMB
Odd-Eyes
I blame FGO for my apparent numbness to fanservice LMAO
Odd-Eyes
I will take so many things in stride and im not sure if thats a good thing but
Odd-Eyes
here I am
Odd-Eyes
It's like ive ingested enough poison that im now immune to most
Gatchanko!
A lot of FGO's fanservice really is just Takeuchi going "I want Servant X to wear topless armor!!" and Nasu going "hai hai bro"
Gatchanko!
and no one challenges them since they get to their art and make tons of cash... WIN-WIN
Odd-Eyes
see: ushiwaka
Odd-Eyes
but it really does just usually come down to the fact that self-inserts are easier and have less of a risk really... since when it comes to self-inserts, the most you can actually complain about are the fact that they're self-inserts
Odd-Eyes
though as a result its actually now pretty common to see self-insert protags who are clearly written with their own non-self-insert character traits but just stop there
Odd-Eyes
there's some work gone into them but then the player is just left to fill in the rest themselves which... lets face it, it hasn't actually really failed yet
Odd-Eyes
I can think of a good few silent protags that fall under this category and im actually pretty sure at this point that that kind of protagonist is the majority when it comes to silent protagonists nowadays
Gatchanko!
/nod nod
Gatchanko!
Like SMT/Persona protags fall into that realm where they def. personality traits from their dialogue choices and actions but the game doesn't always allow you to go deep into their POV
Gatchanko!
But that's what fanfic or RP is for with those that want to explore it
Odd-Eyes
there's a small percentage of character that's there but for better or worse it's up to the player to then fill in the rest of that percentage... and its a formula that actually works too because, gestures at fanfic and rp
Gatchanko!
But it's usually another character that turns to protag and goes "X dies... Man, you look so torn up about it" and I'm like "no actually I thought I thought that was hilarious... Don't tell me how to feel!!"
Odd-Eyes
bFHDSALKFHJ
Odd-Eyes
"Oh my god, X died... the protagonist is so torn up about it"
"Actually I never really liked that character that much so I'm not exactly—"
"YOU'RE DEPRESSED NOW"
"O-Okay"
Gatchanko!
Mash, I love you... But don't tell me that I should be torn up about Servant X dying... WE'LL SEE THEM AGAIN IN CHALDEA BECAUSE DEATH IS CHEAP
☾ Batty
LMFAO yeah they did that in genshin where the MC was like "If you keep using X you'll die" and the npc was like "YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT IT'S LIKE" [keeps using X, dies] and then the game is like "you're sad now" meanwhile I'm like
☾ Batty
Actually the bitch had what was coming to him, we did our best
Gatchanko!
ds;fds;fa oh my god
Gatchanko!
I think even when it comes to the dating aspect... Sometimes, as a player, I feel that it's not so much that you want to hook up with a character and more like you want to learn about them since you think they're cool and interesting
Odd-Eyes
to be fair fgo's been handling making deaths actually sad better now
Odd-Eyes
mostly because lostbelts are a thing and certain chaldea servants not being the same as the ones that we actually encounter in the story
Gatchanko!
But usually, there is a friendzone option if the game is smart or you want to see some chaos and consequences dating multiple characters (which can be funny... P5 has a really funny scene if you do that)
Gatchanko!
And I think P4 Golden? Not too sure...
Odd-Eyes
though even then youve gotta jump through some hoops in fgo to make a servant death emotional when we the player know that it really does not necessarily last BHLKDSAFJ
Odd-Eyes
though in some cases they apparently have
Gatchanko!
I like to call that the beloved "ROLL FOR ME":effect
Gatchanko!
Character X is a total dick throughout the story but they save a kitten from a tree and die a glorious death doing it... PEOPLE LOVE THEM NOW
Odd-Eyes
FHSALKJDS
Gatchanko!
Or sometimes, they don't have that moment... They're just irredeemably evil and sexy and like to mess with the protag but they keep the plot interesting whenever they show up
Gatchanko!
See Belial from GBF... He's popular as hell because he's that type but he's always bringing something new to the table
Gatchanko!
But thank you for answering this question and shedding some light on your opinions, friends m(__)m
Gatchanko!
Sometimes, I feel like the silent protag deal is also due to certain rules and regulations for a game to be made. Some old visual novels were made like that (i.e: Setting must always be a high school, MC must be male, first H-scene must happen 5 mins in) since that's the niches they're reaching out for
☾ Batty
Yeah. I was introduced to fate/ via the ufotable anime and so going back to read the vn realizing there's a whole intro where Rin is the narrator and then having to switch to shirou was like.... BUT RIN WAS SUCH A GOOD NARRATOR...
☾ Batty
alas twas not meant to be etc etc
Odd-Eyes
bFHDSALK
Odd-Eyes
honesty though its fun to notice the differences between rin and shirou as narrators... and its especially fun because we get to have insights into the way they think that you simply dont get when they arent in charge of narration
Odd-Eyes
shirou is his own special kind of fun because his narration is as sassy as Archer but he's always keeping it to himself
Gatchanko!
I actually watched the old DEEN anime before jumping the Fate VN!
Gatchanko!
And yeah... I actually don't like how Ufotable handled Shirou since he has some 10/10 Narration snark where as Archer is just a Shirou without any fucks to give
Gatchanko!
Funny how FSN was actually to have a female protag at first and Saber was going to be male... Ayaka is nothing like Rin tho'
Gatchanko!
I do love how both Shirou and Rin in their narrators see Saber as the Hottest Thing Ever... Everyone wants a piece of the king
Gatchanko!
*narrations even
☾ Batty
King pussy makes a girl question her sexuality
☾ Batty
One taste and it's like "Oh okay yeah maybe I do like girls too, actually"
Odd-Eyes
Rin, knuckle-deep inside of the king pussy: Huh, am I bi?
Odd-Eyes
to give credit to ufotable, without Shirou's narration snark, he DOES come off as much more polite and such BHLDSKAFJ
Odd-Eyes
and lets face it they've always animated stay night under the idea that you're not an anime-only so... rip
Gatchanko!
We like to rip on Nasu for the H-scenes sometimes but they are still really funny to look back on... Imagine FGO if it was allowed to have those
Odd-Eyes
IMAGINE...
Odd-Eyes
eromoba fate/grand order
Gatchanko!
AND YEAH... Nasu also gave his input on how Shirou should be portrayed as "a guy who never smiles due to trauma" so he also comes off as more stoic in the Ufotable version while he smiles quite a bit and has some goofy moments in the DEEN version
Gatchanko!
and man Saber also made Caster bi too... Is there anything this king can't do?
Gatchanko!
Even Nasu confesses that she's Too Perfect for him to write anymore after finishing LB6 (hence Castoria a more flawed Saber was born)
Odd-Eyes
ALAS...
Odd-Eyes
though that wont stop me from crying and just wanting her to be involved in chaldea shenanigans
