minor gripe but I get so disappointed when a thing on YouTube is labeled analog horror but it turns out they just mean it's got scratchy VHS aesthetics
DredgenMoonMoon
like...idk, I kinda want more analog horror where the medium itself isn't just set dressing but actually a part of the thing that's causing the horror in the first place.
DredgenMoonMoon
like I guess if anything it should kinda hit that same note of how the Ring hit when it first came out and before it was overdone to death
DredgenMoonMoon
the use of analog tech was important both for the spooks and the story, and played into how the main characters escaped at the end
Unthwackability
I'm with you
DredgenMoonMoon
most analog horror I see now is "fake educational video with jumpscares and split second spooky frames"
DredgenMoonMoon
some are well done! but the idea is still done to death
Unthwackability
I get why you'd use a VHS filter because it's a pretty easy way to disguise imperfections in your Scary Things and there's that low drone that does kind of feel unsettling
Unthwackability
But most of the time there's no rhyme or reason to using those effects
Unthwackability
I saw one that I can't find again that was a VHS instruction manual on how to put together a machine of a purpose that was unknown until the very end of the video where it revealed it was to chop off your own hand
6LilacMimeLions
i try not to think about how the people making them now probably don't remember vhs
Unthwackability
And it worked because it was played totally straight, there were no stupid jumpscares in the middle, and the verisimilitude was exactly right
DredgenMoonMoon
if I had the skills I'd want to make an analog horror where a good chunk of the horror lies in interacting with the medium itself. Not just ooo spooky tape, but that the idea that engaging with the tape is what puts you in danger.
DredgenMoonMoon
but that's hard to convey over the internet
DredgenMoonMoon
Unthwackability : like that example is perfectly what I'm imagining, though more mundane. The horror comes from trusting the medium of the instructional tape and if you followed it you would be in danger

It's Nick : THAT'S IT. THANK YOU

I have to agree about this about analog horror, honestly. I have been poking around looking for good ones given, well, most of the channels I watch haven't uploaded anything in a whiiiiiile
It's Nick
It's really hard to find a good one
It's Nick
I think it's because it's doing exactly what you said
Unthwackability
I have a lot of tiny little pet peeves about analogue horror, but the biggest flaw in a lot of them is that I don't feel like I could accidentally stumble upon it in a thrift store if that makes sense?
DredgenMoonMoon
yeah
DredgenMoonMoon
not to be all curmudgeonly old nerd, but it kinda feels like people forgot how to make creepypasta series like they used to
6LilacMimeLions
it's oversaturated, so like any other genre that's super-popular, it's full of junk
DredgenMoonMoon
true
Unthwackability
There was another one I saw where a person was messing with their satellite TV feed and stumbles upon a human trafficking ring and it's honestly chilling because there's no supernatural element or jump scare involved
Unthwackability
And I wanted to send the creator an edible arrangement because that's how you fucking do it
It's Nick
Oh, that sounds like one I haven't watched
It's Nick
If you find a link I sure would love to have it, yup
Unthwackability
Lemmie see if I can track it down
Unthwackability
It's Nick
Thanks!
Unthwackability
Content warning for like...everything involved with human trafficking, fyi
It's Nick
My, it was a good one
It's Nick
I enjoyed it, pretty effective
