Tattoo guy got back to me. He won’t do it because he thinks over time it’ll look like ants or spiders crawling across my chest. I’ve got no idea what to do now. I’m bummed out!
HumbugStar✨🔥
I emailed him back for more suggestions, input, or maybe recommending someone else.
Chestnut
If the thinks the design won't age well I would heed that advice and think about altering the approach.
Grazia
Chestnut : likewse
Swamp Daddy
Did you tell him your age? There may be lutes problem over time with a person who’s 57 vs 23.
HumbugStar✨🔥
Swamp Daddy : yes I did.
HumbugStar✨🔥
Chestnut : Grazia : this is what I wrote back.
Thanks for the input. I appreciate that. What do you suggest? Maybe without the dotted lines in between? Maybe a different style of star? Or less stars? It’s honestly your experience and input that I’m grateful for. If it’s not something that you’re able to do then can you recommend someone for me?
HumbugStar✨🔥
I’m really clueless when it comes to this stuff.
Thanks again!
Chestnut
If a tattoo artist told me my design would look bad, I would 100% take that advice and work with them to alter the design. I think you might do better with a conversation than an email.
Swamp Daddy
Maybe placing it in a different spot.
Chestnut
For me, tattoos are about art rather than some deep meaning. The tattoer is an artist and they are interested in making great pieces. While I think the story is important to you, I can tell you my tattoo artist kind of rolls her eyes at the idea that ink has to have great meaning. They want to make pieces that reflect well on them as an artist
Chestnut
I am sorry if this is too direct. My opinions aren't always soft and squishy
Nimil
if a tattoo artist told me the tattoo i want that is special and important to me wasn't something he would do, i would find a new tattoo artist.
Lilly
But that art piece still has to have meaning to the wearer. Yes I want beautiful work but I’m not going to wear random art.
Chestnut
My tattoos have no meaning. They are beautiful. That is all. I think this is a personal thing, clearly. But, tattoo artists have knowledge we do not about how ink and skin ages. And if they tell you it won't look good? I would believe them and alter the design. But that is just me
Nimil
i will say a change in location might help since it sounds like he's worried about aging skin stretching the tattoo design, but if you're dead set on its location it should be your choice to get it there.
Lilly
I don’t think that he is the right artist for a small piece like that. Looking at all of his work which is amazing he does big pieces. You need to find someone that specializes in small line art.
HumbugStar✨🔥
Chestnut : no need to apologize. I’d love to talk to him about it but he only takes calls on Wed and Sat. I kept trying on Saturday but in his email he said he wasn’t in. I’m not “sold” on the design. I told him that I’m completely open to input. If I wind up with one or three stars that’ll be good enough for me too. I just love stars (no idea why)
Chestnut
^ absolutely. When HumbugStar✨🔥 first asked about tattoos I said you have to find someone who is expert in the style you want. Not everyone can do fine line work
Nimil
my mother in law had a huge phoenix tattooed on her back in her 70s as a sign of her finally loving herself, and her first tattoo artist declined doing it because he felt like she was too old to get a back tattoo. the person who she ultimately went with did a wonderful job.
Chestnut
I got my first tattoo at 50. anyone who discriminates against older clients is an ass. Period
Lilly
Yeah tattoos are for all ages!!!
Nimil
i want a million tattoos but i'm too broke to get any, i'll probably look like a book if i ever have the funds lol
HumbugStar✨🔥
Nimil : he’s aware that I’m 57. He’s older than me anyway. LOL
HumbugStar✨🔥
Well, I’m 56, I’ll be 57 on 2 December.

i love looking at curated tattoo artist portfolios! don't mind me
Lilly
I have a few I follow on IG too just love looking at all diverse art
HumbugStar✨🔥
Chestnut : thanks for those links! Unfortunately I don’t have IG but I do like that Maxtattoo studio. He books appointments via WhatsApp and I don’t have that either. So frustrating. I’m definitely getting something star related. Looks like I’ve got more research to do. Difficult without IG. I really liked that the other guy was recommended by my doctor.
Chestnut
You can download IG and just look. You don't really have to participate. I do think a LOT of tattoo artists use IG to show their work and book cliets
Whiskletoe
Getting a tattoo appt with a good artist is an odyssey. I don't know how they stay in business. You have to find someone you like, who is willing to do the type of piece you want. You have to reach out and wait eons for a reply. Wait til they open their books and then pray. Etc. Etc. It's hoop after hoop. It's worth it in the end, but gone are the days
Whiskletoe
when you just walked in and got a tattoo.
HumbugStar✨🔥
Whiskletoe : ugh! I’m really wanting it before my birthday too.
Whiskletoe
I totally get this feeling. But if a tattoo artist isn't booking out months in advance these days, there's a reason.
HumbugStar✨🔥
Whiskletoe : the guy recommended by the doctor said there’s no waiting right now on his website. I think it’s because so many were closed during covid.
HumbugStar✨🔥
I’m really listening to everyone’s advice and taking it on board. This is completely new territory for me and I’m definitely out of my league here. So thank you everyone!!!
Vin
you'd think they'd be MORE booked because they were closed due to covid?
isle
Whiskletoe : yeah, we were lucky to get in, in Sept for our skeletons; grandchild booked us in May and the one who did them is the apprentice, the regular guy is booked into next year. Luckily, the apprentice was fantastic.
isle
If there was no waiting list I would also really wonder. Covid closures would only make it more in demand.
OhCecilia
You have to decide for yourself what’s more important, the meaning or the art of it (or a combination) and then adjust according to that. I haven’t had a tattoo yet but I’ve been doing my research and talking a lot to folks who do. I think it’s good to know what to expect and I’d the aesthetics aren’t super important, find someone who will work with you
OhCecilia
Or at least help you find a middle ground
