How do you leave a tip for housekeeping when you’re in a h/motel? Last place I was, I left it on the dresser with a note saying thank you and no one took it. I’ve also left it like that without the note and still, no takers. I mean if I see them in the hall then I’ll just hand it to them. I prefer that.

I’ve given it to the front desk too but then I’m never sure if they get it.

i usually leave it when i'm checking out, maybe they just don't disturb things until you check out?

tormentedcorpse : I dunno. I always put all my stuff away before housekeeping comes. I don’t like people looking through my stuff! LOL if I’m staying 1-3 nights I tell them to skip housekeeping, then I leave the tip at the end. That’s how I’ve been doing it lately. When I go to Tenerife that’s 8 nights. I’ll probably have them come in the middle.

I have no f'ing clue what to tip to whom. I really, really, really wish people would be paid properly and that my bill would reflect that. Tipping is basically just an employer outsourcing performance management to their patrons and it's stupid.

dkronfeld : agreed. And I guess here in EU they don’t except tipping? I dunno. Restaurants are like that, but I’m not sure about housekeeping. I still tip in a restaurant but way, way less than in the states. Plus if it’s bad service then I don’t leave a tip. I do notice the restaurant “tipping culture” seems to be coming more and more.

I see tip jars at cash registers and such.
Tamsie
In the US you definitely tip housekeepers. Don't know about where you are and I forget about Tenerife, YES I was there for a week a long time ago.

Tamsie : yeah, I’m talking about last time I was in US plus here in the EU. I think either NL or Paris.

I don't even know how you'd tip housekeeping staff. I stopped carrying cash over a decade ago.
Lette
I admit, I never even knew that tipping hotel housekeeping was a thing until after I'd traveled with Joey. (I'm from the U.S.) And even then I thought she did it because she likes requesting extra toiletries. I didn't know it was expected until this plurk made me google. I had no idea.
Lette
But to answer the question, we leave it on the bathroom counter with a piece of paper that clearly reads "HOUSEKEEPING."
Lette
Or sometimes a desk. Basically whatever surface is near the door and clutter-free.
Hilda
I used to tip when I checked out but then I read that it's better to tip every day because of shifts and work schedules, so the person who cleans your room when you check out after a few days may not have been the one that cleaned your room the other days.I leave the tip on the cabinet/dresser in the morning when I leave for the day.

Lette : I’ve left a note like that before too on an empty dresser and still not taken. I think they’ve made them afraid to take money and be accused of stealing.
HumbugStar✨🔥
Hilda : yeah that’s it exactly. I mush prefer when I see them in the hallway to just hand it to them.

If you put money on the dresser when you check out, the housekeeper will take it. They won't take money until check out because they don't want to be accused of stealing

Chestnut : that’s what I’m guessing.
isle
