Seiji has won as much loyalty as he has because, despite being a prickly fucking asshole, he isn't crueler than he has to be and he knows when to leave well enough alone.

Velaven does not possess these qualities.

that meeting was actually going super well by Seiji standards; he established his authority with relatively little violence, he took out what was apparently a noxious and unpopular element within the tribe, he convinced the remaining leader to kneel without having to do violence to him

from that moment, the wolves were already his. he didn't need every individual wolf to kneel. making them do so would only engender resentment and undermine the authority he had just finished claiming.

and Seiji can recognize that. he's actually very good at not twisting the knife when he doesn't fucking have to!

Velaven, however, clearly either can't recognize the tipping point where more pressure will start to become counterproductive, or can't resist applying the pressure anyway.

my question, and probably the question that's going to become very relevant for Seiji when it comes time to absorb the dark elves, is whether this is reflective of dark elf culture in general, or if this is very specifically Velaven's malfunction
